Greetings from Italy wear the gelato is rich, the clothes divine and the scenery is inspiring. I'm on whirlwind European vacation and only have time to share the highlights. First stop: Venice.
On my first trip to Venice I can definitely understand why there is a NYC organization out to save the city (www.savevenice.org). How charming is it to arrive at your hotel via water taxi? The answer: very.
The Hotel Bauers was a glorious first stop in Italy. The service is unparalleled and our room was charming and the perfect blend of vinage and luxe. With only 24 hours in this magical city I had to work fast. The first night we had a moonlit walk to a local restaurant for a seafood dinner I won't soon forget. Note: getting lost in Venice is so easy and even more enjoyable. Toss the map and just give in to the amazing maze of the city. Walking over the bridges lit from above with white and blue sparkly lights...right out of a movie set. On our walk home from dinner to the hotel found we stumbled upon a tasty gelateria near San Marco square. Perfect night for a bit of kismet.
During the day I went to see Dali exhibit today to get a bit of a cultural fix. Enough of that. It is sale season in Italy. I shopped at the Missoni store near Harry'??s Bar (the original Cipriani'??and yes the bellini'??s there are delightful) and scored some great finds at the 40% off sale (plus I get the VAT back so everything was practically free---well, kind of anyway).
What to eat:
Divine Dinner: Excellent Italian wine selection--order fish and don't miss the octopus. Divine.

What to see:
Since my taste leans towards the modern, I was thrilled to find this pop-up exhibit. Who knew Dali could draw so well? Eveidence of his deft illustrations are on display at a pop-up museum.
Harry's Bar is the original. Order a Bellini. You won't regret it.

Ubiquitous. Sale season begins in January. I hit it big at Missoni (expect fashion posts soon).
Where to stay:
Hotel Bauers. Old World charm, new world service.
