Unapologetically Strong

unapologetically strong

Every morning I walk my 7 year old to school and tell her stories. While she might prefer the princess to always get rescued by the handsome prince, in my un-Disnified tales, the princesses save themselves by being strong and smart. You know, the princess dumps the lazy prince and launches her own bio-tech start-up. That kind of story.

I'm teaching her that women can be unapologetically strong. Starting my own business five years ago has led me to be a stronger and smarter mother. Not only can I steer her by my stories, I can steer her by my actions.

Starting a business during a less than robust economy isn't the easiest thing to do. But I knew I wanted a career where I wasn't squeezing my family into gaps, I wanted a career that could involve my family and work with our active life.

Five years later, I'm an employer and a wife and a mother. This means I'm a woman who doesn't make excuses. I make opportunities. I've learned to accept criticism with grace, to let my mistakes be lessons and to laugh when challenges seem insurmountable.

Here's another important lesson: I don't shrug off my success as luck or good timing. I take pride in it. Strong women can relish where hard work leads them. When my daughter says she wants to be a blogger when she grows up, I'm unapologetically proud.
