This Is 40...Something

I don't know what it's like to be 40 (yet), but after attending the screening of the new flick,This is 40, I have a little bit better of an idea.

My parents are about to celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary. Being married for that long, especially these days, doesn't come easy. Throw in two kids and there's an even bigger stress. (But mostly joy, I'm sure, since I am pure sunshine.)

Insert Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann). Remember them? From Knocked Up? They struggle to maintain sanity in their household, and happens. Debbie has a birthday. A big one. Can you guess which? Yep. 40. But the trouble here is she has no interest in being 40. To her, it symbolizes every little bit of an "old lady" from what they wear to how they act. So she decides to do a major overhaul of her lifestyle and drags her husband and kids along with her.

I've had the opportunity to speak with a lot of my friends who are 40 and over and I've come to one conclusion: Most of the women thought turning 40 was no big deal. Most of the men however, thought that turning 40 guaranteed them a Hugh Heffner bathrobe and an excuse to spend an inordinate amount of time on the La-Z-Boy.

We all have our vices. In the film, Debbie is trying to quit smoking and Pete has an obsession with cupcakes. While Debbie attempts to achieve the perfect lifestyle, she's thrown some curve balls that bring her back to reality. She eventually realizes that there's no such thing as a "perfect" life and begins to love what she has.

The actors in this film are top notch. They are funny and sensitive, believable and charming. Something that makes it unique is the fact that Judd Apatow, the director, is married to Leslie Mann in real life---and the two kids in the movie are Judd and Leslie's actual daughters. (Watch for a breakout performance by Maude Apatow.) Can't imagine what family dinners are like in that house.

The movie opens December 21st. Trust us, it's a good one.
