I'm a big snacker and as a mom-on-the-go I prefer to have healthy snacks that give me a boost of energy. This usually involves a combination of nuts, dried fruits and some chocolate pieces to sweeten the deal. After sampling the delicious treats, I was excited to learn more about the company from CEO Jimmy Gutt on this innovative and delicious new venture.

Momtrends: What inspired the idea for GoBites?
Jimmy Gutt: The seed of the idea came from a desire to be healthier for myself. A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to travel the world and found that I was in great shape while abroad. When I returned home, I immediately started gaining weight. There were no radical changes in my diet or activity level, so I started thinking that maybe the pesticides, hormones, and additives found in our food supply were to blame. I began educating myself about the subject and slowly began adjusting my diet to include more organic and all-natural food. That alone made a big difference in my weight and how I felt.

As I continued to educate myself about health and nutrition, I read up on how Americans have become a nation of snackers, making not particularly healthy choices. I polled friends and colleagues about their office snacking habits, snacking habits of their families and kids and the wind-up was, snacking was all about junk food. Their desire to find some healthier options led me to the idea for GoBites.

MT: How do you select the snacks that will go in each pack?
Jimmy: We look at GoBites as the match.com of snacking - you always have the ability to select the products you want to receive. What we do, is provide some recommendations based on the answers you provide to our questionnaire. We take into account people's preferences like whether or not someone likes chocolate or spicy foods. We also tailor our suggested GoBites based on age, sex and lifestyle. Generally, this involves excluding our most highly caloric items from the suggested GoBites for women, older people, and workaholics. If you tell us you lead a very active lifestyle, we make sure we suggest GoBites with protein in them, which helps your body recover after strenuous exercise.

We have also taken into account a variety of dietary preferences. We offer a high fiber plan, and a plan with only naturally gluten free ingredients. In addition, we offer a wide variety of products that are Mediterranean Diet friendly. These products will all contain "good fats" (monounsaturated fatty acids) found in nuts and seeds. We also cater to the principles of a glycemic index based diet, suggesting snacks lower in carbs and snacks that have a good balance between nuts and fruits to balance the effect on your blood sugar.

MT: What do you feel your snacks offer that others don't?
Jimmy: Interesting Ingredients: We all get bored of eating the same things day in and day out. We wanted to go out and find as much variety as we could and give people a chance to taste things they have never had before. I think we offer some really unique flavors with dried fruits like rambutan, jackfruit, pomegranates, monukka raisins (very big raisins with a couple of seeds in them so you get a little crunch when you bite into them), mulberries and goji berries. We are committed to expanding our menu and finding new and interesting ingredients to keep our customers engaged.

Portion Control: Nuts and seeds are very healthy, but they are also high in calories. When I buy a bag of almonds at the store, I can eat 1,000 calories worth of them before I realize what happened. Portion control is important in everything we eat, but especially so in foods like nuts and seeds.

MT: Is there a right way to snack? How can people snack better?
Jimmy: We have consulted with several nutritionists and they all recommend snacking as part of a healthy diet. We asked Robin Barrie Kaiden, MS, RD, CDN, CSSD, and the head consulting nutritionist at GoBites, what she thinks. '??In general, our bodies take 3-4 hours to digest food, which means they need food every 3 to 4 hours. That's where snacks come in. Snacking is important to "spoil" your appetite to prevent overeating and it helps diminish cravings.'? We believe that whatever snacks you eat, they should be filled with natural, nutrient-rich ingredients.
