The New LEGO Friends Collection

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal a little while ago, addressing the new LEGO Friends collection, a girl-themed product line. There was even a petition going around that got 3,000 signatures, asking LEGO to stop "selling out" to girls. Rumor has it that some think new set is pandering and sexist.

So when my daughter got some for her fifth birthday, I thought '??oh great, now I have to ruin a fun time with a lesson on how girls can do anything boys can do, etc.'? I expected to get a LEGO set that had dolled up girls baking cookies, having babies, wearing hats. You know, a blast from the '??50s past.

Then I saw the collection. People, people, people. Put down the sticks and stones. The collection is based on some pretty nice values, all in simple terms a little girl can grasp. Instead of the usual Star Wars, pirates, and warriors with swords and lasers that line the Lego shelves, these are actual professions and hobbies that can excite a little girl into being what she wants to be. All set in a sweet little storytime village called Heartlake City.
