A few days ago I had the unique opportunity to meet with the founders of SeaVees. Founded by designer Steven and sales executive, Derek, the brand represents the cool and laid-back vibe of Santa Barbara (also where the company is based) and a high quality and stylish shoe that reflects a modern consumer. At our meeting, I loved hearing about this company and how these two shoe veterans where looking to expand beyond the corporate model and finally work for themselves. Steven stumbled upon a SeaVees shoe from the 1960s while in Japan and later learned that it was an old company that was initially developed by Goodrich that never went anywhere. After purchasing the name and the rights to the company they devoted themselves to researching the former brand and then re-branded it with their own personal background and focus on '??Authentic California'?? styles. They then developed a men'??s shoe line and received placement in high-end boutiques that were instantly sold out.
They also recently launched an incredible women'??s line that features a California story from the 1960s behind every shoe such as the Westwood Tennis Shoe that honors the legendary Arthur Ashe and the ULCA Championships of May 1965 or the chic Hippie Sandal that celebrates the foundering of the Berkeley Barb in July of 1965. As a brand, SeaVees is not only celebrating shoes but also an ode to a long forgotten California with a sophisticated edge that every one from Brooklyn to Austin to San Francisco will feel confident wearing.
My favorite style from the upcoming Spring 2013 line is the adorable Perforated Buck that is signified by the style of the West with soft nubuck leather, full grain leather trim and a cool holed outsole featuring unique colors like Ivory/Yellow Leather and Cream/Slate Leather. They also have an incredible flat shoe called the Rivera Mary Jane that is an ode to the release of the Palm Springs Weekend Starring Connie Stevens that was filmed at the legendary Riveria hotel. Also made of soft nubuck leather, this chic flat shoe is great for getting around with ease thanks to its full length and leather-lined foot bed that comes in cream or austere blue.
