Weather happens--especially on the NorthEast. That's why smart moms have the right gear in the closet. Our two school drop offs require about a 1 mile walk each way. When you are pushing a stroller, umbrellas are impractical. So are heels. So when the rain is falling sideways, I opt for a hooded water-proof coat and my long wellies.
This month we've been testing the new Helly Hansen line. I know the line from my years of skiing. It started in 1877 by Norwegian captain Helly Juell Hansen and his wife Maren Margarethe. The first product was an oilskin jacket made from coarse linen soaked in linseed oil. While they have never left behind the commitment to making performance gear that can hold up to the elements, the line has become undeniably more chic and urban as they added "lifestyle" elements.

This hooded coat is a perfect length. Designed to keep you warm and dry, the Spitsbergen Parka ($350) will be my go-to jacket on the nastiest days NYC has to offer. The jacket combined Helly Tech® and Warmcore by PrimaLoft® to keep the wind and rain out and the warm in. And we love the length and all the easily accessible pockets--a busy moms best friend!
Style-wise this coat is a winner. Unlike puffy coats that make one look like a marshmallow, this trim coat has sleek lines. Remember bulky doesn't equate to warmth. Now I think I need to upgrade my year's old Hunter boots to this new Carnaby style...what do you think?
How do you battle the elements in style? For all the other moms out there doing the school day drop, I'd love to know what works for you.
