When my sister was little, she bought me a Caboodles case. I was going off to Syracuse University, so she saved her money and got me this pink all-purpose organizer with trays galore for me to bring to to hold all my college stuff. I, like a lot of girls in the '80s and '90s, took that case everywhere. It defined my young womanhood as it housed everything from makeup to relationship trinkets to earrings throughout the years.
Believe it or not, I still have that case. Today it holds nail polishes and is safely tucked under our bed. Sure the snap in the front doesn't always works and the tray sticks a bit, but let'??s face it'?¦it'??s X number of years old! (Editor'??s note: the X isn'??t a placeholder for the real number to be added later'?¦I just don't want to do the depressing math.)
When I heard that Caboodles was still around, I felt thrilled. When I saw that they were celebrating their 25th birthday, I felt old. Then when I saw their My First Love limited edition vintage case, I felt both thrilled and old.
I also had a bit of what Kathy Hurt, Caboodles'?? director of marketing and product development, mentions: '??When people hear about the company and see it, it brings people back to a fun age in their lives and a great time. They have wonderful memories. It'??s kind of a coming-of-age product.'?
Luckily, the company still had the original mold for the one from 1987 that I have tucked under our bed (with the drop-down door and two divided trays). If you want one for your very own, you'??ll have to hurry. They manufactured only 1,000 of these cases in an updated peach and cream color.
To encompass my daughter into the Caboodle cult, there are a few other holiday offerings. For instance, the adorable Oh La La case (shown above) is a sparkly little metal box about four inches high that comes with a bonus bag just big enough for change. The holiday version comes in fuchsia or magenta sequins. Petite, sweet and glitzy...just like her.
So I adoringly pushed new My First Love under our bed (wait...if read in the wrong context, that might sound odd). But I can't bring myself to get rid the room of the old Caboodles. There are oodles of memories attached to that thing, and it does in a way represent my relationship with my little sister - sometimes it snaps and it's not all that pretty, but it sure has stood the test of time and a lot of cool stuff goes into it.
Caboodles are available at Target. The My First Love case is available for $25 by clicking here or dialing it old school at 800-226-9868.
