Grab a glass of wine and sit down for some sobering news. The American Cancer Society'??s most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2012 just came out.
- About 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women
- About 39,510 deaths from breast cancer (women)
- The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8.
- The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. And let's not forget...men can get it too. Trying to make people more aware, Gov. Deval Patrick is hoping to change that in Massachusetts by signing a bill yesterday (Monday, October 1) designating the third week of October as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week.
But it'??s not all bad news. Breast cancer death rates have been going down, more than likely it'??s because all of you lovely ladies are now checking yourself regularly, getting mammograms, etc. Treatment is also better than what it used to be. Today, there are more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. My mom is one of them.
As we start October (Breast Cancer Awareness month), here'??s how a few beauty companies are making sure that the Girls stay beautiful by donating to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Every little bit helps. This is by no means a complete list, so when you go to pick up your faves this month, see what they're doing...it's important to think pink, ladies. Now and always.
