This is not a drill, I am prepping for ski season RIGHT NOW! I have my Ikon Pass (and an Epic Pass too) and am in planning mode. While you may be shopping for the perfect pumpkin right about now, many ski resorts are prepping for the winter. In fact, I received quite a few notes from ski resorts sharing news of the first snowflakes. To celebrate the upcoming season, I thought I'd share ski resorts where it's already snowing.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
They might just be the early season winner. Back in August (no, I'm not kidding), I spotted this snowy picture on Jackon's Instagram page at the top of the Jackson Tram. This may be the earliest sightings of snow of the resorts I follow.
This year Jackson will open Solitude Station. Located at the Sweetwater Gondola, this 12,000 square foot station will be the home of the Mountain Sports School for children 7 years and older and adult lessons for all ability levels.
Jackson Hole is participating in both the Ikon Pass and Mountain Collective this year. Our full guide to comparing season passes can help you pick which pass is right for you. Opening Day is set for November 24, 2018.
Big Sky, Montana
In Big Sky, there's already enough snow to build a snowman. It's no surprise, on average, Big Sky gets a minimum of 400 inches of powder fall on 5,800+ skiable acres each year. I'm excited to head back to Montana this year to check out the new Ramcharger 8. This is the first 8-seat, D-line chairlift in the world, featuring ergonomically-shaped, heated seats and a weather-proof bubble in the world. Big Sky is genius at getting visitors into wide open spaces FAST. 3,200 skiers per hour can ride up Andesite Mountain on Ramcharger 8.
Winter Opening Day is set for November 22, 2018. Use your Mountain Collective or Ikon Pass to ski Big Sky.
Keystone, CO Gets Early Snow
On 9/24/18, Keystone posted on their Facebook page this snowy pick. On past trips to Colorado in November, Keystone has been one of the earliest resorts off of I-70 to open. Vail and Beaver Creek tend to open up later. We'll hope this early dusting is a sign of things to come.
Located 75 miles west of Denver, Keystone is scheduled to open for the winter season on Friday, Nov. 9. New this year at Keystone: Keystone Resort lodging guests can receive exclusive early lift access one full hour before the lifts open, granting them first dibs to skiing and snowboarding. To qualify, book a lodging reservation that includes a Thursday evening stay between Dec. 20, 2018 and March 29, 2019.
Whistler Blackcomb, Canada
It's starting to pile up on the West Coast. Mitch Winton of Coast Mountain Photography took this photo at Whistler Peak on September 16th.
Right now Snowpak estimates Whistler's opening date as 11/21/18. But if these photos are any indication, it looks like that might firm up and there will be skiing for the American Thanksgiving.
Whistler is also on the Epic Pass and will see a season pass price increase on 10/7/18.
