Russ and Daughters Deli
The store front hasn't changed in the decades of family ownership. Expect to find treats you won't encounter in a standard candy store. We love the licorice, candied pecans and the halvah (a crushed sesame seed confection--don't worry I didn't know it either before moving to NYC).
The store was founded by 1914 and is still owned by relatives of Joel Russ. Mr. Russ immigrated from Poland and started selling fish out of a wagon in downtown NYC. The original store was on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. In 1920, he moved the store around the corner to 179 East Houston Street, where it has been ever since.
What to Order
Known across the country for their smoked fish, we encourage you to try some! Located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, this store is packed with goodies. Stroll in, load up and head to the nearby Sarah Roosevelt Park to nosh on your goodies. Our favorites include the smoked fish, wasabi caviar with blinis and cream and the licorice.
