Detox Your Body With Fruit-Infused Water

Can I tell you one of my favorite things about walking into a tropical resort, destination hotel, or spa center? … It’s the abundance and availability of fruit-infused water. I know, I know… I’m easy to please; it’s just one of the simple pleasures and little luxuries I can rarely resist.

Gimme some strawberries or citrus slices in plain ole tap water, and I feel like I’m somewhere exotic and foreign. Hydration with fresh fruity flavor… it really doesn’t get easier or more refreshing. I love it, and, better yet, so do my kids! They generally want juice, so it makes me so happy that I can get them drinking H20 with a few fruit chunks!

Beyond the benefits of hydration and flavor, I never really gave fruit-infused water too much consideration. 3 Ways for Moms to De-Stress

Motherhood can be stressful… Amen. And for all sorts of different, overlapping, switching reasons. From babies who won’t nap to toddlers who wake up too early to teens who you can’t get out of bed at all. From battles over teeth-brushing and breakfast-eating and homework-finishing and car-borrowing and, for the love, putting your shoes in the shoe basket for once! From too many activities and too much laundry to not enough money, time, or sleep, being a parent can be hard. Today, we’re sharing three ways to help you de-stress.

Unlike other jobs, motherhood doesn’t have a closing whistle each day or days off. It’s 24/7 which means in the middle of the craziness, we moms need to find time for self-care. Self-care is not selfish. It’s vital for keeping you – and therefore your family – healthy and happy. Here are three ways we are de-stressing and self-caring this month.

De-Stress Solution #1: Meditate

Really, you can do it! Meditation has been shown to reduce blood pressure, anxiety, depression, insomnia and more.

Level 1: Put on TV show for the kids. Go to bathroom. Lock door. Sit on floor or toilet lid or lay in empty bathtub. Set your phone timer for 3 minutes. Just breeeeeathe.

Level 2: Download a guided meditation app. There are a bunch of good free ones we’ve shared before here. Most let you choose your time (2 minutes to infinity), your focus (breathing? stress reduction? anxious?) and sometimes extras like background sounds or music (babbling brook, anyone?). The apps are good for giving you tips and tools on how to refocus your attention, re-frame your thinking, and use meditation to help you manage life.

Level 3: Get Muse. Of course, one of the questions that can come up when you start to meditate is – how do I know that I’m, you know, actually doing it? Which is a great question! And hard to self-evaluate. That’s where Muse comes in. While sitting quietly definitely still has its benefits for parents, Muse is a brain-sensing headband that tracks your brain activity to show you if you’re actually quieting that never-ending to-do list.

Muse uses the tracking headband and an accompanying app to give you feedback about when your brain is in a calm, neutral or active state. The feedback comes in the form of sounds – if you choose the Beach option, you’ll hear gentle water lapping when you’re calm and rougher seas when your mind starts to wander. I liked the Ambient Music option, but there is also Downtown City, Rain Forest and Desert. At the end of your session, you can see a graph of your brainwaves, how much time you spent in each of the three categories and how many times you were able to “recover” – move from an active brain back to a neutral or calm state. The goal is not eternally to be in the calm state (though that does sound nice….), but instead of get better at training your brain to come back to attention. After using it every day for a week, I could already see an improvement in my ability to quiet my mind. See how zen Muse has made me?

De-Stress Solution #2: Aromatherapy

Fresh brewed coffee. An ocean breeze. You know the impact your favorite smells can have on you. Changing up the smells around your home can have a big impact on your attitude, stress, mood and outlook – for the kids too! The best part is that it takes almost no time. So you can keep running around prepping for that work meeting and making lunches and helping with homework all while you are getting some aromatherapy zen at the same time.

Level 1: Light a calming scented candle that you love. Do this right before homework time, doing dishes or paying bills.

Level 2: Diffuse essential oil. Diffusing is an easy way to experience the aromatherapy benefits of essential oils without having to do much work. Level 1: Call a friend. Parenting can keep you running from one thing to the next. While you’re waiting for swimming practice to be over, take 5 minutes to call a girlfriend and catch up. Chances are, you’ll both benefit!

Level 2: Plan a girl’s night. Whether you go out or stay in, plan an evening with a few close friends. Laugh. Share. Catch up. Maybe enjoy a bottle of Mommy’s Time Out wine. Connect with others so that you can get perspective, support and a break!

Level 3: Plan a weekend away! Yes, a whole weekend. If you’ve never done it, it can feel impossible to actually do, but so magical once you’re there. Coffee when it’s hot? The ability to talk about something other than Minecraft? Sleeping in?! Grab some girlfriends, choose a location and make a commitment to get out of town!

Do You Diva? We Try the Diva Menstrual Cup

“Do you Diva?” This is what a dear friend of mine asked me in her kitchen over cocktails nearly a year ago. After my blank stare, she proceeded to tell me about a tampon-alternative known as the Diva menstrual cup. Today on Momtrends, we give you the scoop on this other way to deal with your monthly visit from dear “Aunt Flow”.

I can still vividly remember the look on my face as my friend explained what the DivaCup was and how to use it. It was something like this:


Fast-forward to a year later and every month as I bought (and thrown away) more and more tampons, the DivaCup came to mind. While I’ve never had any issues with tampons, the cost and waste reminders made me start to slowly, sloooowly be more intrigued with menstrual cups.

Let’s get down to all the nitty-gritty questions that I had and you may be having too – grossed-out face totally okay:

Diva Cup

What is the DivaCup?
The DivaCup is a flexible, un-pigmented silicone cup that is designed to be worn during your menstrual cycle as an alternative to tampons or pads.

It looks kind of big…
The DivaCup comes in two sizes (details here), but when you fold it up, it’s almost comparable in diameter to a tampon. Almost.

How do you, um, get it in there?
I’ll presume you know the correct location, but it is a bit different philosophy compared to a tampon. The goal is to insert the The DivaCup more horizontally, toward the tailbone. To insert you, you fold it in half twice into a tight “U”. (The DivaCup website also lists an alternative method.) Once inserted, you rotate it 360° to ensure that the cup opens and gets into position. While it may seem a bit stiff at the onset, the DivaCup is made of soft silicone that actually softens with body heat. You do need to be a bit more comfortable with your lady parts than with a pad or tampon. There is a helpful, non-graphic video here.

How long can you wear it?
DivaCup can be worn up to a maximum of ten to twelve consecutive hours and should be emptied, washed and rinsed a minimum of two to three times daily. According to their website, most women need only to empty it in the morning and again in the evening.

How do you get it out?
Ideally, when the DivaCup is in place, it will have formed a leak-free seal, so you may have to gently press on the side of the cup to break the seal and remove the cup. Then there is a short silicone stem that you use to remove it.

What if I’m in a public bathroom?
Good question – here’s what the DivaCup website says: “Wash your hands thoroughly before entering the stall, empty the contents in the toilet and simply use a dry or damp tissue to clean the cup. At the next convenient time, clean as per the above instructions.”

Can I sleep/swim with it?
Yes and yes – though I did read some mishap stories about swimming…


Still with me? Still intrigued? Here are some of the benefits of using a menstrual cup.

Keeping the cup in place very gently engages your pelvic floor muscles, more so than tampons, and using a cup means you’re not dehydrating your vag while also avoiding the micro-tears that tampons can cause.” – D.H.

My Experience

When I’ve talked to more experienced “Diva-ers”, they all said not to base my opinion off my first month’s experience. They said it can take a few times to figure out the best folding and insertion method for you, how to ensure you get it in position, and mastering the removal. Plus, every month you only get a few days to practice! That being said, my first month with Diva has been….great! I was pretty apprehensive, but I found it surprisingly easy to wear. Once you get it in place, you feel absolutely nothing, and I love that I don’t have to carry tampons with me or change it throughout the day. I haven’t tried swimming with it yet, but from sitting to sleeping, errands to exercising, I haven’t even thought about it while I do daily life. Zero leaks. Zero hassle.

Tip From Expert “Diva-ers”:

  • Relax when inserting your cup. Also, wet it first with warm water to soften up the silicone.
  • Experiment with different insertion folds.
  • Figure out your anatomy – if it doesn’t feel right or leaks then it isn’t placed right.
  • Be patient with the learning curve. Give yourself at least three periods before deciding menstrual cups aren’t for you, and experiment with different types of cups if the first one you try is a real no-go.
  • If the “stem” bothers you, trim it.
  • Use a gentle, unscented, silicone-safe soap to clean your DivaCup.

Mother Zen: 3 Meditation Apps to Try

Let’s be honest: motherhood can be stressful. Between too little sleep and and too much caffeine, littles who want to be in constant physical contact with you, and bigs that are learning the art of the eye roll, being a mom can tough. How do you cope? When I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed, I tend to turn to one my three go-to de-stressers: exercise if it’s in the middle of the day, wine if I’ve made it to the evening, or when I’m especially busy and only have mere minutes to regroup, a mediation app.

Meditation Apps to Try

I didn’t have any meditation experience when I downloaded my first app a few years ago, but I quickly became a fan. I found that 3 to 5 minutes (or 10 when I could spare it!) of focused breathing with a guided meditation would lower my stress, push off that headache, and renew me enough to get back out there breaking up kid arguments, tackling my to-do list and getting through the day without losing my cool.

I’ve tried a number of mediation apps now and I think the key is finding one with a voice that actually soothes you. Some of the apps had speakers who irritated me more or made me roll my eyes with their over-the-top “soothing”. To get you started, here are three to try.


Headspace – – iOS, GooglePlay, Amazon, & web

Headspace is one of the most widely used mediation apps in the world with over a million users worldwide. This was the very first meditation app I downloaded and one of the things I liked best about it were introduction videos on how to meditate. It’s worth taking the time to watch these if you’re a newbie to meditating. Instead of clearing your mind when you meditate, these videos helped me to realize the goal is to just step back and notice all the thoughts and feelings going on – not attempt to vacate your mind. Headspace offers you their Take 10 session for free – 10 days of 10-minute meditations to help you start to develop the mediation habit. After that, you’ll need to subscribe for access to more meditations – $12.95/mo or $96/year. Depending on whether you like the voice of UK host Andy Puddicombe or not may play a large role in whether or not you like Headspace. Still, the Take 10 is free and a good foundation for anyone looking to learn more about mediation.

STOP, BREATHE & THINKStop, Breath, Think – iOS, Android, & web

This was the very first meditation app I downloaded and its still one that I return to. First off, it’s free so it’s a great way to just try out meditation. It also has a “Learn How to Meditate” section with some pointers for newbies like me. I also love that it starts each mediation session with a “check-in”. You click off boxes that describe your mental, physical and emotional outlook at the moment. Then the app recommends meditations based on your choices. You can also skip this step and go directly to the list of meditations to choose your own like the Mindful Breathing one which is one of my favorites since it’s simple and lets you choose between a 3, 5 or 10 minute session. A truly great feature when I only have a few minutes to squeeze in some moments of zen.


Buddify – iOS and Android

This was the first meditation app I decided to pay for and so far I’ve been very pleased. It offers the unique feature of meditations designed to be listened to while you’re doing things. So if you don’t have time to close your eyes in a quiet room for 10 minutes, Buddify has meditations that you can listen to while you’re working online, eating lunch, trying to go to sleep at night, or walking to work. You simple choose your activity or emotion from the color wheel of options, and then choose from the sub-menu of meditation options under that heading. Each heading has 3-7 different meditations to choose from that have different time lengths, focuses and speakers.  As you try them out, you’ll learn which ones speak to you best. The app also has a great tracking system so you can keep track of your mental state, meditation minutes and numbers of days you’ve meditated in the last week.

Busy Mom’s Guide to Dealing with Colds & Flu

Mr. Momtrends came home sick today. There’s nothing worse than seeing your husband down for the count. He’s a huge part of what keeps our family going. Now not only am I brewing tea for him, we’re now playing defense “man down” when it comes to parenting. If your house runs like ours, you know we need all the players in prime shape. A few weeks ago, I was in the same spot. We keep the right supplies on hand to make sure we bounce back as quickly as possible now that cold and flu season is officially upon us.

The Mr. and I both have full-time work and co-parent the girls. We’re always looking for tips to keep ourselves feeling healthy, Vicks offers DayQuil Severe and NyQuil Severe with maximum strength ingredients to relieve the worst cold and flu symptoms. In addition to keeping these remedies on hand, my best tip to navigating illness is to cut back. I clear my calendar and make rest a top priority. I cut out sweets and remove dairy from my diet. When I’m sick, I focus my diet on nourishing foods like citrus and herbal teas (my favorite is verbena tea from Kusmi).

Though there is always tons of work on my plate, I know staying up late won’t help anything. To speed up recovery, I have to sleep. No other nighttime medicine relieves more cold/flu symptoms than NyQuil Severe*. I get the rest I need to help my body fight back. Four quick recovery tips from Nurse Practitioner Barb Dehn:

1. Don’t Spread It. You’re most contagious in the first 24 hours when your symptoms are at their worst. If you have two or more of these symptoms, stay home to rest: fever over 101oF, cough, sore throat, running nose, headache, body aches, chills, or fatigue.
2. Say no to stress. Now is not the time to plan the school benefit on top of your other responsibilities. Stress can influence the symptoms of cold, cough and flu by interfering with how the immune system functions. To keep your immune system strong, make sure to get plenty of rest and sleep all the time, not just when you’re sick.
3. Elevate the head of the bed. Place a pillow under your mattress to raise the upper body from the waist up. This allows blood to flow away from the head and reduce inflammation of the air passages. Using extra pillows can also ease body aches by taking the pressure off hips, knees and back. Remember to wash your linens quickly once you recover.
