Sweet Summer Dresses for Girls

There is something about summertime that makes me want to wear free flowing dresses all season long. And my baby girl is no different. She plays “dress up” all day long with her favorite frocks. I’m talking some serious outfit changes, multiple times a day people. Haha! So, I try to pick up sweet summer dresses to add to her “try on” stash whenever I can. And being that she’s a fan of variety, they can’t all be investment pieces. Budget-friendly summer dresses are where it’s at and Target, for instance, has a great selection of them!

In fact, I picked up a couple sweet dresses in late spring that I’m loving for summer too. And they both happen to be shades of blue. I don’t know what it is about oceanic hues, but I’m always drawn to them, particularly in the warm weather months. Plus, blue looks great with so many accent colors, like pink, for example, but I digress… Now that we’ve talked about color, let’s talk prints. I’m all about prints this season and Beauty and the Beast is still a big deal in our house, so this toile printed dress was a home run! As was this palm print dress. My little lady loves a good palm print as much as her mama. Bwah!

And every sweet summer dress needs accessories to complement it. My mini me saw these heart shaped Rainbow OPTX sunglasses in my bag and snagged them for herself. What girl can resist hearts? Frankly, I think my sunnies look even better on her than they do on me. C’est la vie. Haha!

So, are sweet summer dresses for girls on your shopping list this season too? If so, head on over to Target. I daresay you’ll find plenty to choose from! And for even more kids’ style ideas, check out our take on mommy and me wellies!

Why I Love Draper James

Why I love Draper James

Oh Reese Witherspoon, you charm me so. First there are your movies (Sweet Home Alabama, anyone?). Then there are your adorable kids you seem to be raising nicely and now you have me hooked on your fashions. Classy, colorful and feminine, you have created a clothing line that’s found a place in my heart and my closet…this is why I love Draper James.

This week I got to try on my first Draper James dress at a fashion preview in NYC at the Alison Brod PR offices. I was smitten with the collections. Reese and her design team have come up with fashion that’s playful and quite wearable.

cheerful cherry dress

When I saw this cherry dress, I asked to borrow it for a big BJ’s segment I taped in Boston. I loved it so and knew it would look great on camera.

Definitely southern in influence and inspiration, the lines have loads of prints and whimsy. While I was attracted to lots of the patterns, the cherries were my favorite. Reese named the company after her grandparents and I’m so glad she took this leap.

Officially called the Cherry Orchard Love Circle Dress — I call it a great dress looking for a summer party. It’s a classic fit and flare cut, making it really flattering on most figures. The fabric has a bit of stretch and I love the knee-skimming length and the POCKETS!

Reese must know practical girls love pockets as much as they love fashion.

red wedge heel

Since the dress is a statement in itself, I didn’t add much, just a great pair of red wedge heels from Ralph Lauren (these are old, but you can see some cool wedge heels over at zappos).

This fall I’m looking forward to my first visit to a Draper James store when I head to Nashville for my Vanderbilt reunion. I bet it’s just oozing charm. I feel like these stores will replace C. Wonder in my heart.

Why I love Draper James--the dresses are very friendly

Fun Prints for Kids and Moms

Prints are kinda my family’s jam. My kids couldn’t help but fall in love with them thanks to my obsession. Bwah! I’ve been decking them out in fabulous prints since they were infants. I’m talking florals, plaids, stripes, you name it…we love it! And this spring and summer will be no different. We will be rockin’ our favorite fun prints on the regular.

I’ve always subscribed to the school of thought that you should have fun with your clothes. And if your kids are having fun with THEIR clothes, it will be a whole lot easier to get them dressed! In fact, we found some oh-so fun prints for kids and moms recently that perked us all up! And just in case you’ve been looking to add some new prints to your family’s wardrobes, I decided to share our new favorite fashion finds with you.

Let’s talk about the kids first, because, let’s face it, there isn’t much that’s cuter than coordinating kids’ looks. Am I right? And something we love even more than wearing fun prints alone is print mixing. How adorable are the floral print dress, plaid shirt and pastel shorts from Gap? And the glitter bedecked sandals and slide-on sneakers are perfect warm-weather wears too! They actually wore these outfits for my parent’s country club’s annual Easter egg hunt, but they would be perfect for any spring or summer occasion.

And mama had to coordinate with her kiddos too, right? On that note, I paired my cheerful print maxi dress (I linked to a similar one from Gap) with statement turquoise rings because I pretty much try to work them into every single outfit I can. Haha! Plus, they’re just too perfect for this time of year. Frankly, I wear turquoise all year long, but it goes particularly well with traditional warm-weather hues like the orange, red, coral, pink etc. that you saw in this post!

So, there you have it…I hope you enjoyed my family’s take on fun prints. Now go forth and print mix yourselves lovelies!

Monday Mingle: Favorite Summer Outfit

summer dress

Wear your summer dresses now ladies. Soon the weather will change, and your favorite summer outfit will be too chilly to wear. I’m heeding my own advice and pulling out all my old favorites and wearing them even if there isn’t a big occasion.

Sandals | Dress | Bag

fringe sandals

Let’s talk shoes (since they are the only new thing I am wearing). This little fringe number form Steve Madden is perfection. I tried a BUNCH of lace-up sandals but nothing worked for me, until I found these. Fringe is just a bonus. The color is slightly metallic and works well with neutrals or brights.

Favorite Summer Outfit

The dress is a couple years old. I bought it at a boutique in Brooklyn called Tango and I love the lines of it. Sadly, there’s nothing currently like this from DVF. You can check here on Nordstrom to see for yourself. The dress just needs pockets and it would be perfection. Even without them, it’s still a favorite summer outfit!

Favorite Summer Outfit

Don’t kill the messenger, but the clutch is long gone. I got at at Anthropologie two years ago, but this one is pretty swank too.

I’m going to stop and take a moment to tell you about this hair. This was day 3 of a blow out. The new Living Proof dry shampoo is awesome. I went running in the morning before this shoot and the dry shampoo was ideal to revive the style and freshen up my hair. I review Living Proof here.

Though you don’t NEED an event to wear a dress, in fact, there WAS an event for this dress. Melissa and Denise, aka TheMoms.com, were hosting a Back to School party and celebrating the cover of New York Family. Toasting the success of a friend is always a reason to dress up! What better reason do you need to wear your favorite summer outfit?

Monday Mingle: Dresses with Pockets

summer fashion

Do you love dresses with pockets? Yep. I do too. They are just practical and pretty. If I were queen, all dresses (and skirts for that matter) would have pockets.

Dress | Leather Cuff (similar) | Sandals (similar)

I found this elegant t-shirt dress when I was shopping for our Back to School Blogger event. Joules was the sponsor of the kids fashion show. Have you heard of them?

Joules is a British brand that has been around for decades. I’m so happy that I found them. My team got to model three different styles from Joules and I loved them all. You can expect fabulous fashion and great quality.

Dresses with Pockets

Dresses with Pockets

Let’s talk about the style. The Joules dress skims the body and is light and pretty. I found the sizing to be true. I ordered a 4 and it fit a little on the large side, but that is fine. But again, I also love this for the pockets.

summer style

We were staying at the Arizona Canyon Ranch and the setting was fabulous. I decided to use the dessert as my back drop. The dress was perfect because all I wanted to carry was my room key–that’s why you need pockets. We’re going to write much more about the Canyon Ranch, but isn’t this setting gorgeous?

easy summer bun

Since we were in spa-mode, I was not drying my hair or dealing with makeup–what you see is what you get. I’m really savoring the summer and drinking in the warm sun and easy style. I hope you are too!

Pretty Flower Girl Dresses for Summer

Flower Girl outfits

Little girls love weddings! These pretty flower girl dresses were from H&M and were a huge hit at the summer wedding we attended in Virginia. It was a rare chance to see the girls dressed up in matching dresses. I picked our outfits to coordinate–I’m not going to lie, I was looking for some sweet family memories.

Flower Girls

The last two weddings they were in, the brides picked the dresses for the girls and they were fabulous! This time around the bride let me select the dresses. I headed to the H&M kids department. These pleated butterfly dresses were $27.90 each. I added a cardigan to complete the look and they were dressed for about $50. As for my look, I wore a dress from French Connection that I bought for $45 a few years ago. It was a steal and it’s a perfect pick for a summer wedding. My girls are learning you don’t have to spend a lot of money to look good. Style is free!

HM flower girl dress

Did you know the average cost of a US wedding is over $26,000? We had a lively dinner conversation about the wedding we attended and about what a wedding means. In a nutshell, we explained that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a lot of love. Just like what I always preach: Style can’t be bought. You have to experiment and take risks and edit and learn.

This particular wedding was lavish and lovely. Yet there was nothing showy or over the top about it, it was two people who are mad about each other. I wanted the girls to add to the wedding not steal the show. The dresses were just the right amount of fancy. The mother of the bride made these pretty flower crowns for the girls to wear (you can make your own flower crown here).

flower crown

She was a gorgeous bride (I don’t want to be presumptive so I’m not sharing any photos of her, maybe later when she’s back from the honeymoon and gives me permission).

pretty flower girls

To accessories the outfits I kept it really simple. The girls wore sandals they already own (saltwater and a pair from Target) and then I brought my A-game and added some great braids.

The wedding ceremony was sweet and sentimental and spiritual. After that we had a lovely dinner and hit the dance floor. The girls loved spinning in these pleated dresses. It was great to have our family there to celebrate love. Hope you get to a summer wedding soon. Don’t forget, when you fall in love with a great dress at a great price, buy it–the occasion will come.

Make your own flower crown and have a great time at all your summer weddings!

Summer Date Dresses

When the summer weather finds you, if it hasn’t already, you’re going to want to be as cool and comfortable as possible…even on date night! Who says you have to sacrifice comfort for style? Not  this girl! The hubs and I seem to be able to find more time for nights out sans kiddos in the summertime, so I like to have my date night wardrobe ready to go. The majority of my date night looks happen to include dresses…and comfy ones at that.

Summer dresses are the perfect pieces to rock on date night as they can easily be dressed up or down according to what you have you planned. I tend to be drawn toward classic red and navy stripes in the summertime, but if stripes aren’t for you, you could go the solid route and add metallic or neon accessories for instance! To make the case for stripes, however, they’re classic Americana and work great all summer long, including on the 4th of July which will be here before we know it.

I found a slew of flirty striped dresses for you over at Gap. Each and every one can be styled a multitude of ways. Whether you want to get sassy with sky high wedges or go the sweet route with flat espadrilles, you’re sure to look just fabulous for your summer date night! Get out and enjoy those summer evenings lovelies! Is it just me or are summer nights tres romantic or what?

C.Wonder Fashion for Summer

It’s been steamy and the question is what to wear to look fresh. The answer is white. This dress is pique and perfect for sunny days and bright parties. I found it at C.Wonder and the store has become a style resource for me.

C.Wonder keeps stepping it up and up with each season. The preppy basics have gotten some boho edges. The eyelet detail turns this simple shift into something super pretty.

I added a necklace I found from Kohl’s–it was $14! The sparkly sandals are now seasons old and still making me happy.

As you can see I am not spending too much time on my hair! I’ve been swimming so much this summer that ponytails are often the standard look. I jazzed this up a bit with a gold band.

The final touch was the Anthropologie bag. I scored it on sale for $24.

Trendy Thursday: Summer Date Night Fashion Ideas

There’s nothing quite like a summer date night. There is something so magical about the summertime and I find myself trying to plan more date nights during the summer than I do the rest of the year.

While the hubs would probably most like to see me in a baseball tee, jeans and a pair of Cons, I’m a dress girl and I always will be. There is nothing prettier than a girl rockin’ a flirty frock in my book. I, of course, love to get all decked out FOR him, but I don’t want to sacrifice my sense of style. Haha! Luckily, my fella tells me I’m beautiful no matter what I’m wearing, so I have carte blanche to wear whatever I want to on date night…and most of the time mama wants to wear a dress!

Massimo Dutti has some insanely gorgeous dresses that I think even my casual wear lovin’ hubs would get behind. If a dress is on the agenda, he definitely prefers  frocks that are on the classier side. And these Massimo Dutti numbers are all classic pieces that you could wear for years to come. Plus, each one has so many styling possibilities!

date2

The striped dress would be nautical perfection paired with some tomato red sandals and a rope bracelet. You could also go a funkier route and pair it with neon accessories!

The natural colored dress with open work detailing is perfect for the minimalist, but if you wanted to jazz it up, I think it would look just fabulous with gold heels and an armful of statement baubles! A bare shoulder screams for a statement piece!

date4

For those of you who lean toward uber feminine pieces, it doesn’t get much girlier than this one shoulder flouncy frock. Metallic sandals and some sparkles in your tresses via a jeweled headband would look amazing against the lavender.

If prints are your thing, the scarf dress is right up your alley. The oceanic colors are beautiful and this piece could easily be dressed up or down depending on your planned date night activity. Personally, I would love to wear it with a pair of flat, nude sandals. Flat, nude sandals are a summer must have for sure. I don’t mind giving in to the hubs’ preferred aesthetic a little. He definitely prefers flats. Crazy man! Haha!

So, are you a dress girl? What’s your favorite style of date night dress?

Show Off Your Stems with Short Dresses

I don’t know about you lovelies, but I’ve been hard at work trying to get ready for summer. Hard core workouts have majorly been on my agenda the past few months, so I can get my stems ready to show off…and so I can get healthy of course. Haha! While maxi dresses are part of my usual summer uniform, there are days here in Florida that are just too darn hot to have anything swirling around my legs. Summer evening events are no fun when you’re sweating right? I’ve attended one to many summer night soirees in the midst of sweltering weather. I plan to be prepared this year.

That’s where short dresses come into play. I don’t typically rock dresses that are on the shorter side, but I think I’m going to make an exception this summer. It’s time to throw caution to the wind and hike the old hemline up a bit. Oh and I might slap on some self tanner too. I have ghostly pale legs you see. I don’t know how great they would look in a short dress right now. Just sayin’. A natural looking glow should help me get short dress ready…don’t you think?

summer dresses, mini dresses, short dresses, sparkle, prints, printed dressess

summer dresses, mini dresses, short dresses, sparkle, prints, printed dresses

summer dresses, mini dresses, short dresses, sparkle, prints, printed dresses

And speaking of short dresses…If you’re looking for some super cute, yet sassy short dresses, Heartloom has you covered! You can find everything from flirty and ethnic prints to some serious sparkle. So, whether you’re headed out for a day of shopping with your bestie or attending a cocktail affair, you can find something from Heartloom to fit the occasion.

I can definitely see myself rockin’ the gorgeous nude number with the printed detailing. Wouldn’t it be perfect with some gladiators and a straw fedora? And I’m of course drawn to the sparkly beauties as well. I’m a total magpie. I need to look at my calendar and see where I can where I can work those sparkles in! And even if I don’t have a particular event in place that’s sparkle worthy, I can always get all decked out for date night right? The hubs totally deserves a little glitz!

So, who else is ready to show off those stems in short dresses?
