4 Rules of Wearing Florals

Did you catch my peony post a few weeks ago?… I rounded up a bunch of peony-printed dresses and accessories and home decor for your spring-shopping pleasure. What I didn’t share though, are the rules to wearing floral fashions.

I like to wear beautiful bloom prints all throughout spring and summer, but I admit that styling them can be a bit of a challenge. Sometimes florals are too, well, flowery… (Does that even make sense?! I think it does!)

The key to the seasonal floral look is keeping it fresh (get it?), and styling it in a subtle way. That’s why I always abide by these “rules.”

Keep It Muted and Understated: I’m not saying bright florals are a no-go. But if you’re tentative about testing the waters with floral frocks and skirts and tops, I’d suggest dipping your toes with more muted hues. This Wayf dress called my name because it’s subtle and soft and feminine without being too girlie. I like that it’s pink, but not too pink, and neutral but still colorful. The midi length is on trend and the cut is flattering and slimming.

Less Is More: Keep the accessories to a minimum. Let the floral pattern speak volumes, and avoid too many other visual distractions. A few bracelets, a simple pendant, a ring, and delicate earrings–pick one or two and then practice discretion.

Blend Feminine and Edgy: The slight flutter sleeve on this dress is my favorite detail because it’s lovely, and provides slight movement. Balance out the daintiness with a leather bomber or denim jacket to keep it modern and edgy.

Mix and Match: Don’t like a full floral look? Try mixing and matching patterns. A floral skirt on bottom and a striped shirt on top. It’s unexpected and totally trendy.

Checks for Spring

Checks for Spring

Sure, lots of people are loving the ruffles of spring, but what about the checks of spring! I found a top from Zara that combines all the trends: the big sleeve, the ruffle and the checks. It’s all fabulous and I took this fashionable top out to one of my favorite places–Maman.

Oh how I love a great café and Maman checks all the boxes (pun intended). Normally when I pop into Maman, it’s too catch up with friends or work from a booth as I nosh on a delicious baked goodie. But if you have time, stay for lunch or dinner. Isn’t the setting swank.

maman tribeca

Let me tell you, curling up with your email and a pistachio croissant in this setting is pretty swell. The vibe is all Paris and I think you’ll love this spot.

maman treats

Back to the clothes. This Zara tops was $39.95 the fuchsia gingham check caught my eye and I loved the easy fit. Yes, it’s got a deep v-neck, but it also has a strap in back that helps the top stay up (I don’t like fussy fashion or tops that have to be constantly adjusted. The swank ruffle sleeve, is all over the editorial pages and I’ve finally relented and tried it on. And I fell in love.

Checks for Spring–How to Wear It

Pair it with cropped jeans in white, traditional navy or black. It’s easy to work with this top or this trend. Don’t be afraid of color–this bright pink is on trend.

As for the shoes, the pompoms are the thing. This pair is also from Zara (sigh, I wish the lines would get shorter there!). The chunky heel is made for walking all over my city. And I intend to wear these all spring long.

trend alert: checks for spring. How to wear them and how to pair them.

How to Wear Spring Stripes and Navy

How to Wear Spring Stripes and Navy. Styling tips on how to wear this classic spring style.

I feel fashion needs to work for me. I need clothes that are equal parts form and function. That’s why I want to give you tips on how to wear spring stripes and navy–it’s easy to put together outfits and you’ll feel pulled together. Let’s go!

I was at our Momtrends NY529 plan event at the ICE event space in Brookfield Place when I spotted this gorgeous installation by Pinaree Sanpitak, she had draped the grand space in white linen that hung beneath the canopy of palm trees, the effect was dreamy and playful. The kids that interacted with it acted as if they were in a gigantic fort–which they were.

The installation will be up in NYC until July 5th at the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place, you can get more information about the art experiences here.

How to Wear Spring Stripes and Navy

For spring, you can’t go wrong with navy. The color is crisp, classic and works with whites, brights, stripes and florals, which gives you so many options. This top is from LOFT. I bought it only a week or two ago in store, but I can’t seem to find it online, so I am linking to these matching eyelet shorts in navy.

White jeans are also a must for the season (and a good Clorox bleach pen to keep them clean). Since I wear what I own, I am sharing jeans that have had many seasons of love. These are from www.miraclebody.com and they have held their shape really well after MANY washings.

The shoes are from Sofft and I get asked about them all the time. I got these about 5 years ago and they still look great (which goes to show you animal skin is always a solid investment). You can’f find this specific pair anymore, but you can get some similar styles over at Zappos. I think the Renita heel is a excellent pick for spring. Sofft is known for having a generously padded footbed and stacked heels. TIP: Don’t be afraid to add a printed shoe to your outfit with stripes.

“Hi, my name is Nicole and I have a problem…” I cannot downsize my bag. I have to carry enormous totes because I am always on the go. My latest is from Zara and I love that it is gold and white and reversible.

cabi maritime trench

Since spring weather is unpredictable, at best, in NYC, I usually have a few transitional coats in my closet like this terrific find from cabi clothing. The Maritime Trench adds a touch of warm and loads of style to my spring outfits. It’s also a very “packable” item since it’s a fabulous knit blend. Fun Prints for Kids and Moms

Prints are kinda my family’s jam. My kids couldn’t help but fall in love with them thanks to my obsession. Bwah! I’ve been decking them out in fabulous prints since they were infants. I’m talking florals, plaids, stripes, you name it…we love it! And this spring and summer will be no different. We will be rockin’ our favorite fun prints on the regular.

I’ve always subscribed to the school of thought that you should have fun with your clothes. And if your kids are having fun with THEIR clothes, it will be a whole lot easier to get them dressed! In fact, we found some oh-so fun prints for kids and moms recently that perked us all up! And just in case you’ve been looking to add some new prints to your family’s wardrobes, I decided to share our new favorite fashion finds with you.

Let’s talk about the kids first, because, let’s face it, there isn’t much that’s cuter than coordinating kids’ looks. Am I right? And something we love even more than wearing fun prints alone is print mixing. How adorable are the floral print dress, plaid shirt and pastel shorts from Gap? And the glitter bedecked sandals and slide-on sneakers are perfect warm-weather wears too! They actually wore these outfits for my parent’s country club’s annual Easter egg hunt, but they would be perfect for any spring or summer occasion.

And mama had to coordinate with her kiddos too, right? On that note, I paired my cheerful print maxi dress (I linked to a similar one from Gap) with statement turquoise rings because I pretty much try to work them into every single outfit I can. Haha! Plus, they’re just too perfect for this time of year. Frankly, I wear turquoise all year long, but it goes particularly well with traditional warm-weather hues like the orange, red, coral, pink etc. that you saw in this post!

So, there you have it…I hope you enjoyed my family’s take on fun prints. Now go forth and print mix yourselves lovelies!

Spring Fun Ready Play Clothes and Swimwear

Spring is here, and with it comes warmer temps and sunnier days. In our house, that means the kiddos want to play outside and explore even more than usual. And since I live to nurture their sense of wonder, I’m always trying to think of new ways we can delve into the hometown fun our own city has to offer. And that exploration can start very close to home. Simply heading out into your own neighborhood can lead to loads of spring fun. My daughter, for instance, is starting to learn how to ride her bike on our street thanks to the Pure Cycle Balance Bike. And while she loves being girly, it can be tough to go bikin’ in skirts and dresses, so a skort look from Pulla Bulla makes for the perfect play clothes!

And once you’ve exhausted all your immediate neighborhood has to offer, why not head to a local attraction like the zoo? We have passes to our zoo, Lowry Park Zoo, and it serves as a great little afternoon getaway destination. Whether we’re exploring all the animals or playing in the water area, I can always count on the zoo wearing out my little Tasmanian Devils. Haha!

And we always make sure we’re dressed for the occasion. Yep, play clothes again! Easy breezy sundresses, like this gorgeous print number from Blue Ginger, help keep my daughter nice and cool, while a tankini, rash top and classic boardie shorts from Snapper Rock are perfect for water play! I love that their swimwear is UV50+ and the Midnight Palm print is too cute for words. I’m always a sucker for coordinating sibling styles…even when we’re talking play clothes. Who’s with me?!

Spring Florals From Zara

The girls were off for Easter break last week and I wanted to squeeze in a little culture and a mommy outing. First on our agenda was a trip to see a new sculpture on Wall Street called “Fearless Girl.”

fearless girl statue

Artist Kristen Visbal created the bronze sculpture—the proximity is what really adds meaning. The strong little girl looks to be facing down the well-known Charging Bull statue. It was installed on March 7, 2017, and you can check it out at Morris and Broadway. You can read my thoughts about it here. I think the sculpture is loaded with meaning and it’s an important conversation to have with your kids—both boys and girls.

spring zara

To make the most of the day, we got a little dressed up in new Zara goodies. I’m wearing the printed Embroidered Blouse. I love the flowing top and the bold bright color. I paired it with Miraclebody Jeans and my Vionic suede boots.

zara girls dresses

The girls are wearing Zara girls—I love the sweet dresses and that they’re only $40! They wore these for the photos AND for Easter. As for me, I know I’ll wear this top a ton this spring.

Since the top is a pretty big statement, I keep everything else simple. A gold tote (also Zara) and a great pair of white jeans. Ladies, trust me—get your Clorox bleach pens and your white jeans ready—it’s time to play with color.

Cowboy Boots Spring Style

When it comes to easy spring style, you can’t beat a dress. This is an easy shirt-style dress minus the sleeves that looks good on a lot of shapes—from curvy to straight up and down. All you need is a great western belt and some cowboy boots, and you are ready to go! I put together this cowboy boots spring style to give you an alternative to heels or flats. I promise you can wear this look even if you aren’t a Dallas cheerleader.

No, I’m not kidding, even folks in NY can pull off spring cowboy boots. If you live in Dallas you know cowboy boots go with everything—from jeans to skirts to shorts. The rest of us might have some catching up to do.

Western chic doesn’t have to be contrived. It is fresh, youthful and colorful. To put this look together, I started with a dress from cabi. The Camilla shirtdress is super easy to style. The dress is mostly white with a touch of turquoise. I added a denim jacket to finish it off.

Cowboy Boots Spring Style Tips

Some people love cowboy boots for fall, I love them for spring, with skirts and dresses. This pair is from Ariat and I found them on Zappos. The Ariat Heritage Rancher is perfect for spring with the hints of coral on the trim.

  • Show some leg—don’t be afraid to wear skirts, dresses and shorts.
  • Look for spring colors. Lots of boots have turquoise or coral which make them easy to accessorize for spring.
  • Keep your bag simple. I added a neutral tote, there’s enough going on in this outfit—I don’t need competition.

I wore this outfit to our Blogger Lunch at Grayson Social in Dallas—we gathered some great social-media mavens to talk about 2017 opportunities.

Where do you plan to wear your cowboy boots this spring? Leave a comment and let me know!

Two Sweet Chambray Outfit Ideas

I’m all about my denim…and so is my baby girl. One of our favorite ways to wear the denim look is in chambray form, especially in the warm weather months. Spring is the perfect time of year to bring out your chambray. This lighter weight material has a denim-like look without the heft. So you don’t have to worry about your little one getting too hot on the playground. If your kiddos are anything like mine, they play and they play HARD at recess. When I pick up my daughter at the end of the school day, she inevitably always looks like she’s just run a marathon. Bwah! So, chambray is definitely the ideal material for the last part of the school year and that’s why we’re bringing you a couple of sweet chambray outfit ideas today…

We recently scored two chambray pieces from FabKids that I know she’s going to get loads of use from. They’re both so versatile and we’ll be able to pair them with any color under the sun, but today we decided to accent our chambray outfits with pink. Let’s start with the chambray dress. Ruffles are a big trend right now and they play perfectly with chambray. Pink Sam Edelman Cynthia Leya sneakers, an exclusive at Kidsshoes.com, were just what her chambray frock needed to add a little a little edge to the equation.

Just as cute as the chambray dress, is this chambray shirt and white jeans combo, also from FabKids. It’s a fun take on the denim-on-denim look, and white denim just feels so fresh and crisp for the season. We finished things off with a pink hair clip and Umi Cady sandals. I don’t know about you, but I’m happy to put away all those deep dark colors and focus on lights, namely whites and brights right now! These white sandals are just as versatile as the chambray pieces and will take her all the way through summer. I see loads more chambray outfit ideas, as well as white sandals looks coming….

chambray outfit ideas

So, now that you’ve seen our chambray outfit ideas, how will your kiddos be wearing it? And what about you mamas? Is chambray on your spring style must-haves list? I wish that chambray dress came in my size! Just sayin’.

You Need a Navy Blazer for Spring

navy blazer for spring

Hello April! It’s time to get ready to layer smart and layer chic. The weirdness and wonderfulness of April weather means we need to be prepared for anything from sunny skies to sudden storms—hey, that’s what makes the daffodils bloom. This is why you need a navy blazer for spring.

how to style a navy blazer

How I styled it

This is pretty easy to pull off. All you need is a pair of great jeans and a fitted t-shirt. My cargo jeans are dark and easy to wear. I added the perfect tee from my friend Carly’s collection and my trusty cardinal red tieks. You could add a scarf to this outfit or swap the flats for heels. That’s the beauty of great basic clothing pieces—make them your own.

I like clean lines and pops of color. For me, the red flats make sense. Plus these travel really well. My jeans are narrow, but this navy blazer for spring would also work with a fuller leg. And moving into the summer months, I will start wearing the blazer with white or yellow denim.

I’m wearing really simple jewelry here—a few thin rose gold necklaces (which you can barely see) and rose gold rings. Definitely have fun with the accessories! No need to worry about clashing.

cute cabi blazer lining

Navy Blazer for Spring

I think I found the perfect pick—a knit blazer from cabi clothing. This is the Grand Slam Blazer from the 2016 cabi Spring Collection. Don’t you love the contrast floral lining?! Yes, it’s classic. It’s got gold buttons and it’s double breasted, but it’s also modern, because it nips in at the waist and get this, the ribbed sweater cuffs are detachable! When the warm weather comes it’s a 3/4 sleeve cover up. Ideal for spring and summer trips.

Spring Style Update and $150 Target Gift Card Giveaway

With the coming of each season, I love to add a few new pieces to my wardrobe. Even if I’m not doing a total wardrobe refresh, it’s fun to try to tap into the newest trends and see how they can play with the pieces already in my closet. So, I’ve definitely been thinking about this year’s spring style update, but I didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on it. You see, as my children have gotten older, and more expensive (haha), I’ve noticed that I think more carefully about my own purchases and whether they’ll really get enough wear to make the spend worthwhile. I’ve also come across a few tricks along the way that help me save. And one of my favorite ways to save is with RetailMeNot.

off the shoulder dress

At Retailmenot.com I can search for deals for the places I already know I want to shop at and I’ve even come across some deals that weren’t necessarily in my plans, but too good to pass up! I’m talking about an online resource where you can literally find thousands of coupons, promo codes, cash back offers and even discount egift cards, which are delivered to your email and backed by a 100 day guarantee. Mark this down for the next time you want to buy a present and settle on a gift card. Why not save when you’re snagging said gift card? But I digress…These e-gift cards can be MORE than gifts. Hey, you could even pick one up to update your own spring style like I did! And then if you combine it with another offer, you’ll be in for some serious savings.

espadrille wedges

cat eye sunglasses

spring style

Let me walk you through an example of how you could save on some new spring pieces like the ones I chose at Target. First, you could pick up a $50 Target egift card with a 5% savings. Then you could combine it with an offer like this $15 off a $75 clothing purchase deal and, finally, there might even be another deal available like $5 off $50 select items+free shipping. Add all that up, and you could save enough to put even more spring style must haves into your basket. *Now it’s important that you make sure to check out all the deals from the retailer you’re shopping at BEFORE you check out. You don’t want to throw money away!

target deal

retailmenot deal

Just look at the gorgeous spring pieces I was able to score at Target for a song. The off the shoulder trend is still hot hot hot this season and a breezy print dress is a fun way to wear it. Plus, this print goes perfectly with my new neutral espadrille wedges. These are the kind of shoes that will give you serious bang for your buck since you can style them a million and one different ways. And a flowy gauze peasant blouse is just what we’ll all need when the temps warm up, but we still want to look pulled together. I can already see how I’ll wear this embroidered beauty. Can’t you? And just think of how much more I would have paid for my spring style update without RetailMeNot deals!

spring fashion

On that note, we want to help you with your spring style update too, so we’re giving away a $150 Target e-gift card! Happy shopping…and don’t miss out on the savings you can score at Retailmenot! Your wallet will thank you!
