Monday Mingle: Styling Tips for Jeans

spring stitchfix

My latest Stitchfix delivery came in. The theme seemed to be: Styling Tips for Jeans. The delivery started with a pair of light denim jeans. I liked the color and the distressing. I picked the best of the bunch to make an outfit, but I”m going to tell you, I suspended my “fix” I haven’t been dazzled. Plus, I think it was making me buy things I don’t really need. I’m fussy about how much stuff I put into my closet.

mom style denim jeans

To complete the look, they tossed in some cute tops and a tassel necklace. I opted to photograph this great top–it’s pink and deep purple snake print. It was a nice bright print with a silky finish. I popped on a tassel necklace that I owned rather than the one they picked.

I am feeling like most of the things they send I already own. That’s when you know it’s time to end the shopping relationship. Don’t you agree?

snakeskin top

But back to the outfit. Tassels are all the rage. And I like the new long length. I did a little front tuck on the top and left the back out. Since it was cool, I reached for my Furry Jacket from cabi. My other accessory was an old Michael Kors bag.

isola boots

To finish the outfit, I pulled on these Isola Heels, I felt fancy! The Brinley might be tall for everyday, but for dressing up denim a bit they are great. Wear cute shoes–that seems to be my #1 styling tips for jeans.

It was a fun day of shooting with my friend Kim-Marie from www.luxurytravelmom.com. We found this great bench in front of the Vinegar Hill House my favorite local restaurant in Brooklyn. The restaurant is tucked into a quiet street and serves the most delicious seasonal fare.

I love shooting outdoors in Brooklyn, I’m so lucky to have this backdrop just a walk away from my house. There are so many perfect spots to look at fashion freshly. Have you been getting outdoors to shoot your fashions?

I can’t wait to see what you’ve been wearing! Don’t forget to tell me which subscription boxes you’re loving or if you’ve given up on them.

Monday Mingle: Talbots Spring Style Event

how to style a jumpsuit

I’m a converted jumpsuit lover. A few months ago, I featured a black jumpsuit, now I’ve got a spring style update with this bright spring Jumpsuit from Talbots.

Jumpsuit | Necklace | Shoes

talbots madison ave

The outfit was for a Talbots shopping event hosted by Instyle. The InStyle and Talbots stylish shopping soiree was held at the 525 Madison Avenue store. Have you ever seen the shop? It’s so charming. The warm brick building looks like an inviting home plopped down into the middle of Manhattan.

talbots event with Niki Taylor

The event featured special guest Niki Taylor who is the face of many Talbots campaigns. In addition to the lovely Niki who mingled with guests and help them make selections, guests also got summer styling advice from InStyle Editor Dana Avidan Cohn.

As for me, I got to play hostess, I loved seeing our readers and meeting some of the valued Talbots’ customers. The spring collections are wonderful. So much to wear that’ll make you look right on trend this summer.

talbots shopping event

We had a blast talking about all the spring trends…like jumpsuits. I’m wearing the Refined Crepe Jumpsuit. It’s easy to style, since all you need is one piece of jewelry and shoes. I love the easy-fitting shape and the pockets. talbots event Madison Avenue

Ok. If you don’t believe me, check out what the very cool InStyle Editor, Dana was wearing…a jumpsuit of course! We had a good giggle about our style picks.
Instyle Editor Dana Avidan Cohn

And I love talking with Niki Taylor. It’s not everyday you get to chat with a super model. She’s absolutely lovely and can you believe this…she’s got 4 kids. How is that possible?

Talbots Model Niki Taylor

I think she’s a genius pick for Talbots. She looks so effortlessly chic and timeless in everything she puts on. The stakes were pretty high when I was selecting my outfit. A national magazine editor and a super model. Yikes!

I decided not to try to blend in. I opted to stand out. And I opted for big accessories.

talbots flower necklace

Let’s talk about this fun Talbots necklace. It’s like wearing a bouquet! I figured since I’m already wearing a color that says “look at me” I might as well go bold with the necklace.

Nine West Metallic Heels

These are not my every day shoes. They are definitely in the special occasion category. This sexy pair is from Nine West. The Tornaydo pointy toe pumps are two-tone metallic, a lot of silver with a little rose gold. I had to have a heel since I knew Niki would be tall. Amazingly, these heels were easy to stand in for 3 hours. Plus, they are H.O.T.

It was fun to put on some party clothes. I hope you got to do the same and that you’ll join us in the Monday Mingle Link Up again.

Monday Mingle: UGG Liberty London Print

 Ugg Liberty London

I was lucky enough to get an early Mother’s Day gift–a sweet pair from the UGG Liberty London collection. I’m wearing the Mini Bailey with Bow Liberty bootie. Liberty Art fabric like these has been a fixture in London fashion for over 140 years. UGG partnered with Liberty on this limited edition collection. This is a signature print from Liberty’s archive.

styling spring uggs

I have been a fan of the beautifully made sheep fur booties. I live in them all winter. Now there’s a pair I love to welcome the cooler days of spring. They are very breathable so even when things warm up, I’ll be comfortably stylish. I was so very happy to slip these on over the weekend.

UGG Liberty London

I’m training for the Brooklyn Half Marathon and ran a little over 13 miles on Saturday. I was pretty wiped out after that. But I had a bunch of errands to run. I slipped this on and was in heaven. Any mom would adore having these boots for a treat.

uggs fashion

Pampering can come in many forms. It can be a massage or a home-cooked meal. For me, treating my feet right is a wonderful gift. I run, walk all over NYC and then stand up to cook and play with the kiddos. I don’t have time for weekly massages, I do have time to treat my feet right with a supportive and pretty pair of shoes.

uggs for the family

I wasn’t the only one who got a sweet gift. The girls also got new UGGs. The pink Bailey Bow and the Bailey Button. We intended to do a family outdoor shoot, but the weather wasn’t cooperating. Suffice to say, they loved them.

There’s a special deal too.UGG has a special offer for Mother’s Day from now until May 8th when you purchase a UGG Liberty London pice you’ll get a box of See’s Chocolate. Get all the details on UGG Mother’s Day gift-giving. Thank you so much UGG for these sweet treats for our feet!

Monday Mingle: Styling Denim Shorts for Spring

spring capsule wardrobe

I styled my denim shorts (a part of my capsule wardrobe) with easy pieces for spring. Yes, there’s a whole lot of denim in this outfit, but I think I managed to look both grown up and put together thanks to a few key accessories.

White Denim Shorts | White Sweater | White Sandals | Denim Jacket | Bee Pin | Rebecca Minkoff Bag | Rebecca Minkoff Tassel

styling spring denim

My white denim shorts are a warm weather staple and the perfect thing to wear for my first lobster roll of the season at Luke’s Lobster in DUMBO, Brooklyn, Luke’s is a Brooklyn Bridge Park treasure. It’s packed with juicy Maine lobster on a buttery roll. DELISH! And they let the lobster sing, There’s not heaps of mayo on it to mask inferior lobster.

Luke's Lobster roll

That wasn’t the only treat. There is also a bag involved. For a Mother’s Day gift, I gave myself this new Rebecca Minkoff Feed Bag. I accessorized it with the Tassel Key Fob. The bag is buttery soft with a gorgeous pebbly texture. The silver studs make it edgy and cool. And the color is so sweet. I can’t wait to pair it with more things in my closet.

rebecca minkoff tassel

I was really happy with my purchase for about a day. But then I found out that our Creative Director had the same tassel that she found at Target for $5! Needless to say, I returned the $45. That seemed silly to pay so much more. Here they are side by side. Can you tell the difference?

handbag tassel

Here’s one more little touch–adding some pins to my denim jacket. I found this bee pin at Banana Republic and added a onesie-earring. I saw an article in Redbook about adding lone earrings to a lapel. It’s fun way to give those earrings a new life and adding jewelry can be an easy way to become an expert at styling denim.

I’m working with a capsule wardrobe to come up with outfits that are easy to style for spring. There’s lots of denim in this spring style package. You can see the full capsule wardrobe in this video I created for MODE:

And here are the links to the 10 easy pieces:

Monday Mingle: Spring Fashion Finds

must have accessories for spring

These spring fashion finds for moms make great Mother’s Day gifts. While I won’t discourage anyone from giving mom flowers for Mother’s Day, I think spring fashion accessories are going to be well received and loved.

I’m sharing three favorite accessories that are extremely giftable. And I’m also proving a point that I make time and time again, accessories are the #1 way to make what you already own look new again.

Last year’s cabi sweater with the split back, looks fresh as a spring tulip thanks to the new white hanbag from Rosetti and the bangles from Lagos. And my boyfriend jeans (of which I am pretty confident everyone owns a pair by now) are freshened up thanks to the new gold flats from eight fifteen.

fun spring fashion finds

I’ve got a spring in my step thanks to the new goodies!

First, let’s talk about this bag. Mesh and perforation continue to be trendy this spring. The Rosetti bag is beautifully constructed with loads of pockets. Mr.Momtrends laments that I can never find my keys, in my handbag. True enough, there’s a reason I call my totes “the great abyss!

The problem is, most bags only have one opening. This Rosetti bag is organized with tons of pockets and zippers–there’s a place for everything. Sadly, I can’t find the exact bag to link to, but this white satchel on the Kohl’s site is pretty close. Most Rosetti bags are priced around $40 or less–making them a really affordable and great gift.

white leather handbag

You know I love my arm candy. On my wish list are these iconic “Caviar” bracelets from Lagos. The brand is known for the “caviar” texture on jewelry. It look so sparkly. And yummy like caviar.

rose gold bracelets

I loaded my arm with three White Caviar ceramic beaded bracelets with rose gold accents. The prices start at $450 and go up. I love the caviar bracelet with the rose gold bars added in don’t you? I felt like Cinderella for the shoot–Lagos loaned these to me, at midnight, I had to pack them up to send them home. Sigh. Maybe Prince Charming (Mr. Momtrends) will come to my rescue, or maybe I’ll rescue myself when I finish this book!

lagos whited caviar bracelets

Spring means tons of walking in NY. The nice weather has me walking all my errands and avoiding the subway at all costs. In fact, the other night I walked home over the Manhattan Bridge when there were subway delays. A good pair of shoes is essential. I went to the Seychelles preview last week and found a new-to-me brand called eight fifteen. The site features this great quote from Coco Chanel–Luxury must be comfortable or it’s not a luxury,” true enough Coco!

gold flats eight fifteen

Eight fifteen features an innovative Ortholite® padding system previously only found in performance athletic shoes to support feet in the most vulnerable places.  Plus the leather is buttery, I can’t find this gold flat online for a link yet, but I did see a few pair of the shoes on the Anthropolgie website. I am going to be looking for this brand in the future. They also make some gorgeous heels.

coco chanel quote

Ladies, there’s no need to start from scratch this spring. Wear what you’ve got and make it look fresh with accessories. Now, I want to know, have I inspired you? Are you giving mom something fashionable? Don’t forget, Mother’s Day is May 8th!

Monday Mingle: Spring Capsule Wardrobe

spring style

I’ve created 10 fresh spring outfits out of 10 pieces of spring clothing to create a capsule wardrobe. Most of the clothing is under $100 and some of it I already owned. The idea is to build a wardrobe the mixes and matches and works for you. Today’s outfit features:

AG denim skirtOlive Tank | hoodie cardigan | boots

To review, here are the ten pieces:

10 pieces spring capsule wardrobe

Here are the 10 pieces with links:

1. Distressed Jeans
2. Olive Tank
3. AG denim A-line skirt
4. Calypso St. Barth hoodie cardigan
5. Splendid tie-dye tee
6. Splendid Black t-shirt
7. LOFT olive vest
8. White denim shorts
9. Cabi Fresco Dress
10. Cabi white sweater

Do you already own some of these? I bet you do. I tried to make denim a big part of this capsule, thinking that most women already own these pieces. Last week, outfit #1 used the same tank plus the black jeans.

This week, I’m introducing the perfect denim skirt from AG. Denim is very practical for me–I need clothes that are versatile and sturdy–motherhood is messy at times. It’s not too long and not too short. It’s got a bit of an a-line to make it easy to walk in (and also flattering on the backside). I added a cardigan that I found at Calypso to the outfit because spring in NYC means wildly fluctuating weather.

cool cardigans for spring

The pom-poms on this top make it young and fresh. Since I’m always cold inside it’s a must have for me.

The fun part of capsule dressing is the ease and then the chance to play with accessories. I added my favorite booties and a cool belt to make this a little more trendy. The booties are everywhere this season, I hope you jump on this trend. As for the belt, this one I found in Paris a while back, but I do find great belts at Anthropologie too. I like buying belts when I travel since they have memories attached and are easy to bring home.

Are you loving this more is less trend? Do you want to create a capsule of your own? It’s ideal for simplifying things in the morning and for travel.

Monday Mingle: Fun New Way to Wear a Scarf for Spring

transition to spring outfit

I’ve started to build a capsule wardrobe for spring. The “big reveal” video is being produced by Mode Media, and should be ready soon, but until it is, I’ll be dropping in outfits from the project to get you thinking about a dressing system for spring.

spring easy outfit
Many of my working friends don’t like to shop. They find clothing shops stressful and are always asking me,”What 5 pieces do I need for spring.” I listened and I’m here to help. I’m starting with this spring. I broke it down to 10 pieces that can create 10 outfits.
capsule dressing capsule outfits

Let’s start with the first outfit. Tank + jeans. What could be easier? Not much. The olive tank can work right now all the way through summer. Distressed jeans are so trendy and I love the youthful energy of them.

Here are the 10 pieces with links:

1. Distressed Jeans
2. Olive Tank
3. AG denim A-line skirt
4. Calypso St. Barth hoodie cardigan
5. Splendid tie-dye tee
6. Splendid Black t-shirt
7. LOFT olive vest
8. White denim shorts
9. Cabi Fresco Dress
10. Cabi white sweater

distressed jeans for spring

With the jeans I added a western style belt and some black booties. Both are more than a few years old. I do believe in investing in good shoes and belts, because they last and last.

scarf tied as a vest

To make it a little grown up, I used a HUGE scarf from Theodora & Callum (current styles are available at Anthropologie, mine is a few years old) and tied it as a scarf. This style also makes a great beach cover-up. Once you know how to do this tie, you will be inspired to get your old scarves out this spring and reinvent them.

Scarf for spring

Because it would take me about 10,000 words to explain how to do this, I made a video instead. Here are the video instructions:

Crystal clear on the instructions? If not, let me know. I’d also love to know if you are into the capsule trend! So glad you’ve joined me once again for Monday Mingle, the stylish collaboration between Bon Bon Rose Girls, Cheryl from Oh to Be a Muse and Momtrends.  Each week we post about our personal style and then invite our friends to join in the fun.

Spring Outfits that are Easy to Wear

Spring Outfits that are Easy to Wear

Spring Outfits that are Easy to Wear: I’m so ready to wear dresses again–it’s the easiest way to put and outfit together for spring. This one went along for my trip to Costa Rica and I “hired” a very special photographer to capture the photos at the El Mangroove hotel.

Fresco Dress | Sophia Sweater | Bracelets | Tieks Slippers

easy spring outfits

perfect white sweater

Not only did this outfit travel well, it also has loads of style. Let’s take a look at the perfect spring dress the Fresco Dress from cabi. First, let’s start with this feature: The dress has pockets. Oh, I love a dress with pockets. It’s light with a trendy floral print and is perfect for the warm days ahead. The length is flattering and the dress can be belted to make it slightly shorter.

how to dress for spring

Over top I’ve layered on the Sophia Sweater. This top is also from cabi. It’s lace on the back and knit on the front. I wore it with white denim shorts for a white on white look, but I also layered it over the dress. I plan to wear the lace with all sorts of denim this spring.

fashion for moms

The outfit was relatively simple to put together. I slipped on my Tieks flats and some bangles and was ready to go. I didn’t even bother to dry my hair. It was all air dry and go. Well I have to admit, everything looks better with this light and a sun tan. I barely touch my hair in the summer, I can’t wait to get to the warmer weather.

leather bracelet from costa rica

How do you accessorize a dress? For me, it’s all about bracelets, this spring. You know I’ve got a thing for bracelets. This set I picked up from a recent trip to Costa Rica.

Monday Mingle: Easy Spring Outfit Ideas

furry coat styled

It’s officially spring and time to start thinking about outfit ideas that can work with the wild temperature fluctuations on the East Coast. The day can start out in the 40s and end in the 70s. It’s no joke that you need layers and a sense of humor to dress for this type of weather. Lots of my friends had a dusting of SNOW last night.

Siena Top | Traveler Pant | Noguchi Bracelets | Booties

Follow
cabi spring top

When I think about spring fashion I want a few things–first color! In winter, I tend to wear dark colors (lots of navy and gray). I’m not apologizing, it’s just how you deal with the dirty slush here in NYC. But once the daffodils pop up, I crave color. For this outfit, I started with the cabi clothing Siena print blouse (A portion of the net proceeds from the sale of the Siena Blouse will fund The Heart of cabi Foundation’s efforts around the world. The foundation gives loans to women to start businesses) and then add my old Furry, Furry coat from the brand to layer it. Because the second essential for spring is dressing in layers.

cabi furry furry

Warmth and color combined. Score. The furry jacket is almost like a sweater, I wear in indoors if I’m cold. It’s really light and has a soft blush color.

spring style for moms

For the pants, let me just say that everyone needs this cabi Traveller pant. I wish I could earn commission and host a cabi party and sell this pant to everyone I know. One of these days I will host a styling event in my apartment. And when I do, I hope this pant is still around. It’s completely flattering and so comfy.

suede booties for spring

The new boots are from Anthropologie the Jeffrey Campbell Taggart Booties ($200). They come in five colors, but this olive pair drew me in. I’m still riding the bootie trend! Are you still into this one?

jospeh noguchi bracelets

And finally the bracelets are from Joseph Noguchi. Colorful bursts of fun. That’s what spring is all about! I keep adding new beads and love the way they accent any outfit.

Monday Mingle: TOM’s Fashions Give One to One

easy spring outfit

I’m a brand fan of TOMS, not just because of the one for one donations they make to worthy causes, but also because the fashions are so wearable. Did you celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD is March 8th) last week? I did! And I put together this outfit all around my new TOMS tote that’s designed to support moms.

Toms tote bag

You know I’m keen to support women. Every Mom Counts is one of our important charity partners. I think Christy Turlington is a goddess for all the work she does around maternal health. When TOMS, the original one-for-one brand, got on board with the cause I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

For IWD, TOMS is offering a simple yet empowering way to celebrate women and life – for every bag purchased from a special collection, TOMS helps to provide safe births for mothers and babies in need. It only takes 1 bag to support delivering vital materials and training needed to help provide a safe birth for mothers and newborns (additional info here).

TOMS suede booties

TOMS booties

The “You’ll be Amazed” tote bag ($58) is just a part of the one-for-one movement. There’s also the shoes. Like this pair of peep-toe booties. Can you say obsessed! This pair is not only unbelievably comfortable, it’s also going to work with all my denim this spring. And as you all know, with the One-forOne program every pair of shoes you purchase, TOMS® will give a new pair of shoes to a child in need.

cool vest for spring

I put the outfit together around the shoes and bag. I had a disappointing run-in with a spring vest from StitchFix last week, but I wasn’t deterred. I found this MUCH better option at LOFT. This Lou & Grey Utility Vest is my new BFF.

LOFT necklace

Layered with a t-shirt from cabi and a LOFT tassel necklace and new sunnies, I feed ready for all those 60-degree days on the weather forecast.

LOFT sunglasses

This easy-going style is perfect for spring break travel and ideal for my busy mom life. I love wearing denim on casual work days and figuring ways to make basics more fun. Adding accessories like the tote, sunglasses and booties is the way to make what you already have new again. Let’s keep shopping our closets and keeping it fresh and fun!
