Kid Style: The Not-So-Mellow Yellow Fall Fashion Trend

When my son walked into his classroom on the first day of school this year wearing these pants, his teacher smiled a big, broad Kindergarten-teacher smile and said, “Look at you! You look like a fresh new pencil, ready to work!”

Indeed, his yellow pants are a statement piece and a sight for color-deprived eyes. And even though they might seem difficult to wear repeatedly, they’ve been a staple in his weekly wardrobe rotation. That’s because bright mustard yellows are having a major moment. We’ve found lots of tee-shirts that have slight pops of yellow, and coordinate perfectly with this punchy pair.

When I took the kids apple picking this weekend at Fishkill Farms in upstate New York, I dressed them both in their matching yellow pants (toddler girls’ skinny cords HERE). My littles were one with the sunflowers! There is something so spritely and joyous about this color, and these were the perfect ensembles for a picturesque autumn adventure. (And, FYI, the farm still has an abundance of apples of all varietals to be picked off the trees!)

Want to add some mustard to your kiddos’ wardrobes? Here are a few ways to style your favorite pair of trendy mustard-yellow pants.

Graphic Tees for the First Day of School

My little guy starts Kindergarten in two and a half weeks. We actually just got the school district calendar in the mail, and my husband and I spent a good thirty minutes geeking out over all the elementary activities and family picnics and extracurricular activities at the beginning of the year. Kindergarten Barbecue?!? Annual Carnival?! Circus Day?! Family Bowling Night?!?! Parents’ Night Out!?! Sign. Us. Up. Especially for that last one. Of course, my big man on campus needs to have a fitting wardrobe for all these awesome academic events!

Good thing I’ve found a few adorable options that are perfect for the first day of school, the homecoming parade, picture-day and beyond! Paired with jeans or khakis, these Instagrammable graphic tee-shirts are perfect additions to your incoming Kindergartner’s collection. Better yet, they’re all super affordable–so you can snag ’em all.

Sorry, no sneak peek at my little guy in his big first-day outfit! I’m a strict believer that the first-day outfit has to be saved for the real deal! But check our Instagram on Sept. 6 for the final reveal.

1. “Color Outside the Lines” Tee, $12 / 2. Printed Raglan-Sleeve Tee, $12/ 3. “Invent the Future” Tee, $12/ 4. “Create More” Tee, $12/ Genius Tee, $12/ Graphic Football Tee, $12

Masala Baby Swim Styles

Summer is in full swing. Pool days, beach trips, park visits—it’s all become a big blur at this point in time; and we still have another month and a half to go! But it’s true what they say—time flies when you’re having fun. And we’ve definitely been having fun and making the most of the sun, sand, surf, green grass, and cool pool. The season is fleeting, and we want to enjoy every hot, humid, and muggy moment.

I tease, but we’ve also been getting a LOT of use out of our Masala Baby fashion finds. You may remember that we wrote about this incredible collection just a few short weeks ago—and we’re so beyond obsessed with their bohemian kiddie styles, we just had to give them even more love. Made in India, featuring a medley of colors, textures and motifs, Masala Baby’s styles seamlessly blend modern comfort and style.

With a global aesthetic and modern feel, Masala’s kiddie caftans are so gorgeous and equally effortless. This one is soft (100 percent cotton) and easy to throw on when you’re little girlfriend is done splashing around the pool. The beautifully intricate embroidery and pompom detailing makes a simple, playful, and stylish statement.

Likewise, Masala’s swimsuits are intricately designed with fashion and functionality at the forefront. Made with comfort and coverage in mind, they hold up to typical summer wear and tear, and look good by the pool, at the beach, balancing on an oversize flamingo, or even doing somersaults in the backyard. Carefree and vivacious—because that’s what Masala Baby, is all about.

Masala Baby: Global Style for Summer’s Adventures

Hippie meets preppy. That’s how I’d describe the Masala Baby summer collection. It’s colorful, cute, playful, trendy, and stylish. Beachy-chic and totally adorable.

Masala Baby is a baby and kids lifestyle brand that combines the rich cultural influences of India with a contemporary aesthetic that crosses borders effortlessly. With tasseled coverups and caftans, seersucker linen shorts and dresses, and bold bubble, the line looks and feels global, and every style manages to strike the perfect balance between inspirational and practical; functional and fashionable.

I dressed my littles in Masala Baby this past weekend on our strawberry picking adventure and our first seasonal beach outing, and they looked breezy and cool.

How handsome does my boy look in this Sumba Organic Tee? He looks ready for the islands when paired with a pair of turquoise Old Navy shorts and matching slip-on sneakers.

Here he is again in a Neat Shirt Gajah  and striped seersucker shorts?

My babe is a beachy keen vision in the Baby Sanur One-Piece. The look is ever sweeter with this Masala Baby beach hat, but girlfriend has a mind of her own and wouldn’t wear it.

We’re loving the entire collection. Nicole’s daughter recently rocked a Masala Baby caftan too…. and we’re thrilled to learn they’re expanding their mommy and me options! We can’t wait to twin at the pool soon!

Lands’ End for Back to School & a Giveaway

Lands' end back to school cool

Lands’ End makes the crunch of back to school shopping so easy for busy moms. They have the fashions the girls want, the quality I need and of course amazing convenience–everything on my shopping list is just a click away.

Lands' End Style for kids

For the past eight years we’ve been heading to Lands’ End online to order up all the cute, new school gear we need. I used to have all the fun of putting together outfits. As the girls have grown, each has developed a very, um, particular style. Now we shop together.

back to school fashions for kids

The little one wants animals, pink, glitter and pizzazz. Lands’ End has updated their fashions to bridge the line between mother and daughter. She’ll gravitate towards the graphic prints and pops of color. I know the fit will be reliable and the clothes will make it to the end of the school year.

I’m especially loving the updated denim. Lands’ End has the trendiest printed denim–very cool! She’s wearing the 5-pocket Pencil Jeans— did I mention she loves horses! She didn’t want to take off the cozy knot fleece. The lining is like “a hug” she reports.

lands' end accessories for girls

Speaking of cool, my older girl has big opinions on what is “in” and “out”–when did she become such a fashionista? For her, she wants to show off her style. Accessories are key. When we looked at Lands’ End together, she was most excited about the scarves and boots. The horse print tassel scarf was selected immediately. It was a “must have”–I like her priorities.

She lives in leggings–thank goodness Lands’ End makes sturdy ones in so many prints. She picked the Shimmer Ankle Knit Leggings but there are dozens of colors and prints to pick from and loads of deals to be had.

Now a moment about shoes. At our school, girls can wear what they want as long as they bring gym shoes. My girls love, love, love boots. I’m guilty of influencing their love of shoes. They’ve seen my shoe closet and get the idea that shoes matter. I can’t argue. Everyone in our house agreed the Lands’ End boots rocked!

The silver Chelsea boots are just awesome! And the Lacey suede boots are going to make a great debut at middle school this fall.

lands' end boots for girls Finally, a moment about backpacks. We’ve been gifted many over the years, but we keep coming back to Lands’ End. The competition–well they try hard with style, but come January, the zippers break, the straps fall off and I’m scrambling to get a new one. Now we don’t mess around. We go right to Lands’ End for school backpacks and get the perfect size and style–and quick personalization.

That’s why we’re taking it to the streets of NYC to style our favorite trends. Since this line is just for girls 2-14 and we happen to have two of them, we decided to fashion a photo shoot. The two models happen to love clothes and books, so the setting was a natural!

Kate Spade GIrls Striped Skirt

We headed to our favorite shop in DUMBO, Brooklyn P.S.Bookshop. Owned by Yuval Gans, this shop is a key part of our vibrant community. They buy & sell used & rare books, first editions & reprints, fiction & non-fiction books. But they are so much more than a book store. Yuval led the first storytime my girls attended. He would read a few books and strum his guitar charming all the tots into a love of books and bookstores. He carries a wealth of children’s and young adults books and my girls love to peruse the shop. Sadly, he’s come upon some financial difficulties. I thought this photo shoot was a great way to show my support and highlight his upcoming kickstarter campaign.

Spring Fashions for Kids by Kspin Design

Motherhood is not only a life changing experience, it is an inspirational one where a lot of us find second careers or finally have the courage to pursue our passions. Kerry Lynn Spindler is one of those moms that turned her career into a fashion model into a successful business with Kspin Designs, an upscale children’s line.

After being diagnosed with melanoma at age 27, Kerry decided to take her career to a different level with a children’s fashion company whose materials are specially designed and hand-crafted in the USA by both Kerry and one of her seamstresses. In addition to featuring unique and hand-made products, the company also serves a dual purpose in its mission by serving as a platform to raise public awareness and education for children by providing free sunscreen and safety tips with every purchase.

With the summer coming, we are loving this fusion of fashion and education. Here are some of Kerry’s favorite pieces and a fun interview.

Kspin Design

Momtrends: What is the inspiration behind the look of the collection?
Kerry: The inspiration for our line is based on the love of color, texture, contrast and of course children. Our team of expert seamstresses loves to use each of these elements to create a subtle yet eye-catching refined style. As artists we are able to take styles of yesterday and make them modern and whimsical which enhances their timeless quality.

Momtrends: Can you tell me about your background with design?
Kerry: I started making plus sized prom dresses when I was in 8th grade. For my 16th birthday where most people aould ask for a car, I asked for a sewing machine. That was a bittersweet proposition for my parents at the time because I would use their sheet sets to designs outfits the night before school. We laugh about it today but back in the day not-so-much. From there, I started doing home decor projects and later went on to work in a Couture Bridal Salon. I have always had an appreciaton for beautiful quality and I emulate that through my designs. In addition, each of the hand selected seamstresses on our team share the same passion and diversity in experience.

Momtrends: What inspired you to start this line?
Kerry: I was diagnosed with melanoma at age 27 and decided to take my career path in a new direction. My modeling experience and passion for fashion inspired me to create a platform to raise awareness and begin educating at an early age.

A friend’s daughter was also an inspiration. I had seen photos of her in her toddler years and just fell in love with how “girly” and “dainty” she was and couldn’t resist putting that energy behind my sewing machine. Fast forward a few years later and here we are. I think one of my favorite things about my job and my inspiration is watching our “Kspin Kids” grow up. It is so fulfilling and motivating at the same time. I can’t count how many “Kspin kids” I have now but, I enjoy every one of them just the same!

Momtrends: What are some of your favorite pieces?
Kerry: It is hard to say. I really enjoy each piece for different reasons. Each of our designs compliment an active sophisticated child but if I had to choose a few favorites they would have to be:

Little Fellow – “Striking in Stripes”
Little Miss – “Bundle of Beauty”
Little Bundle – “Tweet in Raspberry”

Livie and Luca Shoes: Eco-Friendly Love

Livie and Luca Shoes

Livie and Luca has been a shoe brand close to my heart since I laid eyes on my first pair. The reason is clear. These whimsical, playful shoes make me smile, so I keep buying them. My daughter has worn so many so many of the styles and every time I’m impressed by the quality of the materials and the comfort of the buttery soft leather.

Inspired by nature, folklore and the imagination of children, Livie and Luca creates timeless shoes that are all kid. There is nothing too sophisticated or grown up, but that doesn’t mean their styles pander. With bold colors and fanciful details, these are the shoes that look cute with everything my daughter wears from jeans to skirts to shorts to dresses.

Whenever they can, sustainable and eco-friendly materials and practices are used to create these lovely shoes. The leather is lead free, boxes are made from 50% recycled paper and the glue is non-toxic. Livie and Luca partners with Art for Humanity to donate  gently-worn shoes to children in Honduras, so send them back your shoes when you’re done with them and they will have another life. They also donate 10% of their online sales to charity. Oh, and did I mention the shoes are also handmade? Yeah, it’s hard not to love this brand. (Especially, because of the shoes themselves.)

The above Flutter Shoes are available in navy and cream. Navy with hot pink and turquoise = true love!

The Bloom shoes are available in five colors. I love the combination of hot pink and orange.

The Boa shoes are seriously stylin’. Available in four colors. I like these black with red stitches.

The Juno shoes are cute without being too cute.

Gwen Stefani Debuts a New Nautical Set of Harajuku Mini

Harajuku Mini

Some celebrity collaborations make perfect sense. Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Mini Line for Target from last year was one of them. We loved this adorable kids collection featuring bold and playful colors that allowed kids to have fun with color as well enjoy items that focus on individuality. Gwen recently expanded the next chapter of the Harajuku Mini history, where Super Kawaii meets street with some adorable navy, pink, yellow and white nautical-themed items.

This new collection, available now on Target.com and at Target stores, features nautical-inspired apparel and accessories for infants, toddlers and tweens. The collection, ranging from $4 to $30, features fashionable stripes, mermaids, crabs, sharks and pirates in flowy dresses, over-sized totes and screen-print tees. Here are some of my favorites:

Sophisticated sailor blazers look chic over graphic tees paired with knit shorts and stripped leggings. The line also features maxi skirts and asymmetrical dresses.

We are all about travel and this collection includes a cute mermaid and shark backpacks ‘?? complete with fins ‘?? so you can all travel in style.

Anchors, stars and stripes adorn oversized totes with twisted rope handles for the ladies, while toddlers can rock sailor suit onesies and screen-print tees.
