Cute Striped Summer Dresses

Cute Striped Summer Dresses

I’m always on the hunt for cute striped summer dresses — they are easy to dress up and a great way to get ready in a flash this summer. With a summer dress like this one (which is under $100!), you can head to just about any party. Add just a few accessories and you’ve turned one piece into an outfit.

Cute Striped Summer Dresses

Let’s start with the cabi dress. It’s a light weight silky fabric in a cut that fits every figure (and it looks especially good if you have a lot of curves). The Knot Dress is fully lined and hits just above the knee–and guess what? Pockets!

Roberta Roller Rabbit Paola Big Fold Over Clutch

I added a fun new striped bag from Roberta Roller Rabbit. Fringe is a big trend right now and this fuzzy bag is loads of fun. The safe way to wear it is with a white t-shirt and jean shorts, but I’m pushing the boundaries a bit and pairing stripes with stripes.  The Paola Big Fold Over Clutch could be the perfect party bag for your summer. And unlike dinky little clutches, this one can hold a lot more than just a lip gloss and your phone.

Here it is all pulled together. This striped dress is ready to go out on the town.

And the shoes, oh the shoes. Cabi introduced shoes this year and I am loving the Isla Wedge — it is right on-trend. I love the wedge heel, that I can dance in and walk in. It’s a shoe that I’m giving lots of “play time” right now.

How to Wear Spring Stripes and Navy

How to Wear Spring Stripes and Navy. Styling tips on how to wear this classic spring style.

I feel fashion needs to work for me. I need clothes that are equal parts form and function. That’s why I want to give you tips on how to wear spring stripes and navy–it’s easy to put together outfits and you’ll feel pulled together. Let’s go!

I was at our Momtrends NY529 plan event at the ICE event space in Brookfield Place when I spotted this gorgeous installation by Pinaree Sanpitak, she had draped the grand space in white linen that hung beneath the canopy of palm trees, the effect was dreamy and playful. The kids that interacted with it acted as if they were in a gigantic fort–which they were.

The installation will be up in NYC until July 5th at the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place, you can get more information about the art experiences here.

perfect spring outfit

How to Wear Spring Stripes and Navy

For spring, you can’t go wrong with navy. The color is crisp, classic and works with whites, brights, stripes and florals, which gives you so many options. This top is from LOFT. I bought it only a week or two ago in store, but I can’t seem to find it online, so I am linking to these matching eyelet shorts in navy.

White jeans are also a must for the season (and a good Clorox bleach pen to keep them clean). Since I wear what I own, I am sharing jeans that have had many seasons of love. These are from www.miraclebody.com and they have held their shape really well after MANY washings.

The shoes are from Sofft and I get asked about them all the time. I got these about 5 years ago and they still look great (which goes to show you animal skin is always a solid investment). You can’f find this specific pair anymore, but you can get some similar styles over at Zappos. I think the Renita heel is a excellent pick for spring. Sofft is known for having a generously padded footbed and stacked heels. TIP: Don’t be afraid to add a printed shoe to your outfit with stripes.

“Hi, my name is Nicole and I have a problem…” I cannot downsize my bag. I have to carry enormous totes because I am always on the go. My latest is from Zara and I love that it is gold and white and reversible.

cabi maritime trench

Since spring weather is unpredictable, at best, in NYC, I usually have a few transitional coats in my closet like this terrific find from cabi clothing. The Maritime Trench adds a touch of warm and loads of style to my spring outfits. It’s also a very “packable” item since it’s a fabulous knit blend. You can find out more about cabi’s spring collection here.

Styling a Bomber Jacket

Styling a Bomber Jacket

A great jacket can take you far during the transition season. I picked this shiny silver one up last fall when I was on Mom Boss Book tour in Denver. I spotted it in Francesca’s and loved it–very disco chic. This week, I decided to talk about styling a bomber jacket

Well, Francesca’s sold out of this one long ago, but they do have other well-priced options in the bomber style. If your heart is set on silver, I found a few places to refer you. ASOS has this one and there’s one more I found at Macy’s that looks really similar to the one I’m styling here.

When it comes to trends, this one probably won’t be around for too many years. I bought this jacket for less than $50–and I highly recommend you stick in the same price range. Once you see the trend dying out, you can pass it along to a thrift store and someone will nab it for a 50’s costume!

Styling a Bomber Jacket

For now, styling it is pretty easy. I see lots of women pairing a bomber with jeans and athletic shoes. That works for sure. For something a bit more sophisticated try this:

  • Opt for a slight heel. A bootie will do nicely. I’m loving the new Leila Bootie from TOMS.
  • Since the jacket is baggy, keep it slim on the bottom.
  • When you are first experimenting with this, try a monochromatic palette underneath.
  • Keep the accessories up by the ears or on your wrist. I’m wearing a pair from cabi.
  • Skip the scarf. I tried one but it looked too fussy.

I opted to wear all black under the jacket. Let’s be honest, the jacket brings a whole lot of fashion to the outfit. I didn’t have to try to hard with everything else. On the bottom, I wanted a nice sleek line. I’m wearing the cabi clothing Pencil Trouser. It sits high on the waist and has a side zip. It’s almost tight enough to be a legging, but has the structure of a pant. It’s great for travel. A sleek and skinny high-rise fit with comfortable stretch fabric that fits like a dream, the Pencil Trouser has a wide elastic panel at the waist for a streamlined silhouette

Styling a Bomber Jacket

Under the jacket, I’m wearing the cabi clothing Indulgence Top. It’s a 3/4 sleeve black top with “floaty layers”–it’s just body-conscious enough to work under the jacket. That’s about it. Two black staples underneath and I let the bomber jacket take the spotlight.

Chic Knits

Styling spring knits to look fabulous at work or play

The weather warmed up last week and I got to take these chic knits our for a spin in Battery Park City in New York. I’d been eyeing these new pieces from the cabi spring collection–they looked so good on the runway, and I’m thrilled to say they feel even better on.

I was traveling in the city for a little “staycation” at the Conrad Hotel with my daughter. We wanted to dress up and I wanted to be chic and comfortable, hence the knits. I think knits are perfect for work or play–and I was going to do a bit of both.

Chic Knits

Chic Knits

First let’s talk about this Dame Skirt. It’s a knee-skimming length with a bit of swirl. It could go to an office or out to dinner without missing a beat. I am glad to see waistlines on the move back upwards. This skirt will sit on your actual waist.

You could wear it with flats or go dressier, as I did, with a pump. I picked out these metallic pumps from Nine West. Fancy for sure.

I paired it with a navy top (I will say the colors are 95% of a match but not 100–but it doesn’t matter). I just love this top. It’s so easy to slip on–it feels like a favorite t-shirt (and, in fact, can be worn under a blazer too!) but has structure enough to look super professional.

It’s called the Hampton Shell and the stripes are perfectly places to accentuate your positives.

Spring Knit Fashion Tips

  1. Monochromatic knits will elongate your body.
  2. Go with a bold accessory. This lucite necklace helps modernize the outfit.
  3. Metallics are in. Jazz up this outfit for date night with a shiny shoe.
  4. Watch the jewelry. Knits can snag so be careful with clasps!
  5. Keep things smooth. My favorite panties are from Soma. You can also go for spanx.

Shopping Your Closet

Shopping Your Closet

This year’s fashion theme is Shopping Your Closet. I want to inspire you to use your time and money well. When it come to fashion, I’m not like other bloggers pushing you to buy, buy buy. I promise in 2017 my fashion posts and instagram posts will be about making the most out of what you already own and SHOPPING SMART.

Yes, companies pay me to feature them. I will do my part to pick the best of the best to work with and integrate my new finds with things I already own. I ascribe to the Marie Kondo theory that things don’t bring you joy, but being organized will. When you go in your closet you should feel GREAT about the options.

For this outfit, I was sent a new dress from cabi. I added in my favorite boots (featured MANY times on Momtrends), a favorite leather jacket from Ralph Lauren (this motorcycle jacket is from a sample sale I went to back in 1998) and a scarf I ordered from a cabi consultant.

The dress is a bit too thin for cold days in NYC, that’s why I layered on the scarf and jacket. I will also add navy or gray tights as the the temps dip further so I can wear this all through winter.

Shopping Your Closet Rules

1.) Will I wear this for more than a year?
2.) Does it fit flawlessly?
3.) Does it work with things I already own?
4.) Does it do something UNIQUE for my wardrobe?
5.) Does it replace something I already own and can give away?

Shopping Your Closet

If the answer is yes, GO FOR IT! Let’s hold each other accountable this year! Let’s shop smart and dress fabulous without having closets that make us break out in hives.

These are my goals for the year and I’m so glad you’re with me. Today Cheryl from Oh to Be a Muse will host our LAST meet up. Be sure to visit and then keep coming back for more fashion inspiration each Monday.

Monday Mingle: Style a Jumpsuit

Style a Jumpsuit

Want an easy holiday party look? I suggest you style a jumpsuit, like this one from cabi. It’s got a fit that hugs the right curves–plus my favorite feature POCKETS!

I love the idea of having an outfit that is as simple as a dress but has the comfort of pants. The Grace Jumpsuit ($139) fits the bill.

Style a Jumpsuit

The one and only downside? Of course it’s the inevitable bathroom trip. Ladies, a little more time in the powder room is worth the flawless look you can put together. I added on a furry (faux that is) jacket and this look was ready for our holiday party.

Ready to jump on the trend? Here are my style tips. But remember, I think fashion is personal and fun, so don’t feel like I’m bossing you around.

Style a Jumpsuit

1. Go for statement earrings or bracelets–the zipper is a strong feature of the neckline, it almost looks like a necklace.
2. Add a heel. This dresses up the look.
3. Watch the VPL (visible panty lines)–not classy. I love the SOMA vanishing edge.

Let’s talk about the bling. The asymmetrical Saga earring set ($36) from Bauble Bar is so trendy and cool, it makes a great gift for the lady on your list that sparkles. Pinch the “crawler” earring onto your lobe to attach–like the jumpsuit this requires a bit of maintenance, but so worth it.

Statement rings like this one also are ideal for playing dress up. This Arrowhead Ring ($42) is adjustable and a great way to dress up your black dresses and jumpsuits.

Monday Mingle: Great Fall Coat

Great Fall Coat

I wore this great fall coat to speak at Women Entrepreneurs Rock in Asbury Park, NJ. Did you know about 20% of our total readership is in New Jersey? True story. So that means there are tons of women who are on the journey of being a mom entrepreneur there–I was so excited to join the event at the legenday Stone Pony. The event was amazing–I especially loved hearing from Michelle Litzky, Founder of Litzky PR.

For my outfit, I layered a few favorites. I wanted to wear this new structured car coat. I just got it from cabi and I love the print and the trim lines. It’s not too heavy, in fact, you can wear it indoors quite comfortably. It’s a printed ponte double knit that hits just below the hips. A new favorite in my closet. And isn’t the warm glow of the ocean the best setting!

cabi-fall-print-coat

I have been wearing the leather cord necklace my friend Katja from Skimbaco.com sent me NON-STOP.  It’s part of the Enjoy Life diffuser jewelry collection that she created. I’m wearing the BOHO Wrap Choker Necklace ($23) and this necklace is definitely another fall favorite.

Here you can see the tank top styling a little better. I love the neckline. I put it with an old leather skirt from LOFT and my new suede boots. Suede boots are essential for your fall looks. This pair from Robert Clergerie (the Admir) has been my favorite this fall. I couldn’t resist getting the Asbury Park boardwalk in the background.

Suede Boots for Fall

Here you go, head to toe chic! It starts with a great coat and ends with fabulous shoes. I know it’s a lot of black, but that’s how I dress going into fall. With travel and cooler weather, you’ll start to see me in a lot of gray, navy and black. How about you? What colors do you wear in the fall?

Monday Mingle: Fall Outfit Ideas

Fall Outfit Ideas

One of my favorite fall trends is the red theme. When it comes to fall outfit ideas think about mixing and matching your red hues for a fresh take on the color of power.

Cameo Top | Rockstar Earrings | Tieks Flats | Louis Vuitton Bag | Deconstructed Jeans Outing Blazer

I got the idea from the cabi Fall 2016 fashion show. One of the collections was all about red. From that collection, I paired a floral top with a knit blazer and distressed jeans for an easy fall transition look.

Let’s start with the top, it’s a fresh fall floral–the Cameo top is a great transition piece. Wear it with your white jeans right now and then darker jeans as the weather cools.

Louis Vuitton Bag

Since we know fall is all about layering, the Outing Blazer is the perfect topper for fall. It can go to the office or to a ball game and it travels really well.

No woman can live without denim. For fall I’m loving this dark pair from cabi with just the perfect amount of destruction. They call them the Dusk Destructed Skinny jean you’ll call them your go-to pair of jeans.

fall outfit ideas

They look good with heeled boots or flats. I wore my Tieks Cardinal Red ballet flats since I had a lot of walking to do. And I brought along my favorite tote from circa 2000 when I got my first big promotion with Ralph Lauren. Sometimes fashion treats last and last.

Tieks Shoes

For the final touch, I added these new Rock Star Earrings from cabi. You’ve got to love a little daytime sparkle. I love all the colors worked into this pair.

cabi earrings

This look will be going with me on the Mom Boss book tour. I’m so proud that President of cabi, Kimberly Inskeep wrote the forward to the book (oh, and I’m proud to be wearing cabi on the cover!), Here’s a little snippet…

“…So if you’re trying to figure out how you could possibly become a Mom Boss with all the demands that encircle you, or if you’ve been dreaming from time to time and just looking for that last ounce of gumption to launch your own thing, or if you’ve ventured into the world of business building and been burned, you’re in good hands. Nicole will help you muster the confidence to try (or try again). She’ll give you all the right things to think about to get headed on the right path toward a life of calling your own shots.”

Thank you Kimberly and I can’t wait to share the book with everyone in a few short weeks. For now, you can pre-order Mom Boss here.

Two Ways to Wear Metallic Sandals

Being that fall is nearly here, I’m wearing my summer sandals as much as I possibly can. Don’t get me wrong…I love my fall boots, but there is something so freeing about slipping on an easy breezy pair of sandals. Plus, I get to show off my pedi. Haha! The ease of slides is something I’ve really been enjoying this summer and one of my favorite pairs of slide sandals has to be these ergonomic Vionic Jura sandals that I picked up at Sole Provisions. Not only are they a perfect silver that goes with nearly everything, but they’re ridiculously comfortable. Just sayin’. Since metallic sandals have been my summer jam, so I thought it would be fun to show you two ways to wear them!

metallic sandals beaded necklace

traveler pants

The first way I rocked my metallic sandals is with a simple black CAbi tee and they’re oh so versatile traveler pant. I can’t tell you how many ways these bad boys can be worn. Olive pants are so versatile…much like metallic sandals. Thanks to the bit of glam that the sandals brought to my simple look, I needed little more to accessorize it than my trusty African  bead necklace.

Tipsy 3

Tipsy 2

Tipsy 1

My next look is decidedly more casual and a bit cheeky…just like me. Haha! My Dream Team tank top can be found at Tipsy Elves, along with a slew of other hilarious tees. It’s proven to be one of my go-to summer pieces. And it was obviously the perfect thing to wear when I was cheering on Team USA! So much is going on up top, I simply added my favorite turquoise bracelet and a cowboy hat to Bermuda shorts and the metallic sandals.

So, if you too have some sandals that you’d like squeeze a bit more wear out of, I hope this helped give you some more styling options.

Monday Mingle: Dress for Hot Weather

Dress for Hot Weather

When you head to Arizona in the summer you need a plan for how to dress for hot weather. This look started with a hat and went from there.

Skirt | T-shirt | Gold Birkenstocks | Hat |

A classic t-shirt is essential for your summer wardrobe. This one from Splendid is from my spring capsule. I’ve styled it so many ways and with so many outfits.

Dress for Hot Weather

Hat styling Tips

I’m wearing a classic Panama hat from J.Crew. In Arizona, the sun is no joke. All the girls on this trip to the Canyon Ranch had a strong hat game going on. The temps soared to well over 100 degrees. This one was woven by hand in Ecuador. The lightweight palm is idea to shade your face and protect your skin.

To style it, I simply swept my hair into a tidy low ponytail. Perfect for travel or a hot day when you need protection. Bonus: You don’t really have to style your hair.

Dress for Hot Weather

The skirt was picked up a the cabi Scoop event last month. I was able to shop the sample sale and this skirt from the spring 2016 line is wonderful for travel.

stella and dot cuff

How do you accessorize an easy summer outfit? Simply and lightly. I picked a cuff from Stella & Dot and my classic gold Birkenstocks. My theory? When you are wearing a hat, it’s best to keep it simple.

And here’s a look at my stylish friends–be sure to check out more our sublime team trip to Canyon Ranch.
