Winter is here and it’s time to switch up the beauty routine. I’m swearing by the new beauty cleansing oil I found from Kiehls. It’s called the Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil.

Beauty Cleansing Oil

Putting oil on your face seems counterintuitive doesn’t it? But Kiehl’s new botanical product will have you rethinking what oil can do for your face. Your skin won’t feel greasy at all. I promise.

In the past year, I added a brightening facial oil to my skincare routine, making me think this cleanser might just for me.

Three Things I Love About Kiehl’s Cleansing Oil

1. The smell
2. It gets eye makeup off easily
3. It leaves your face feeling refreshed, not dry

You won’t get a big sudsy wash, as the cleanser emulsifies, it’ll get whiter and milky looking. I start with three pumps on dry skin. I blend the oil in my hands and then apply to my face. After a bit of cleansing, I wet my hands and add some water–things get a little sudsier then.

For my everyday eye makeup, this gets EVERYTHING off! When I did a dramatic evening eye (charcoal shadow and black liner), I did have to go back with an eye makeup remover to get the eye makeup off.

With the drier, colder air, switching to a gentler cleanser just makes sense for my beauty routine. Do you switch things up for winter? I am also on the hunt for a GREAT winter moisturizer to use after skiing. Any ideas? Any great moisturizing masks? Friends, I want to test them. Please let us know!

It definitely smells like a garden–there’s nothing harsh or chemically about the scent. I was happy to see evening primrose oil (which is rich in omega-6 fatty acids)–I’ve been hearing so much about primrose is face products. Plus it has my favorite essential oil, lavender, which just makes everything smell like the fields of France.  It’s also soap-free, sulfate-free, and mineral oil free. But it’s not free. Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil is $32.  Shop for it here:

Best Dry Shampoo

living proof review

I’m a no-shampoo convert. I need the best dry shampoo I can find.  Since 2008, I’ve cut way back on shampooing. It’s no accident that this coincided with having my second child. I simply had less time for beauty rituals. But there was a bonus to letting the shampooing go…I have found that letting your hair rest leads to your best hair ever. But I also love to exercise. I love to break a sweat. That’s where dry shampoo comes in. And I’ve got a new favorite, Living Proof.

Here’s why we love it:

Dry shampoos get you through the mid-week days before your next shampoo. They absorb the oil and leave a fresh scent. Living Proof goes beyond that. It actually gets hair clean. using a “Triple-Action Cleaning Technology.” The biggest difference I notice–the clean, fresh smell. Living Proof Dry Shampoo has a time-released fragrance system that gives you a clean scent throughout the day. This is perfect for the woman who wants to make her blow-outs last as long as possible.

How to Use It

Shake well. Hold canister 6 to 10 inches away from dry hair, then apply Dry Shampoo section by section in a sweeping motion to dirty or oily areas. Wait 30 seconds for powders to activate and cleanse, then remove them by massaging your hair with your fingers, or brushing your hair. Apply more if needed (just make sure to shake the can again).

How it Works

Most dry shampoos work with sweat. Not all of them clean. Plus, this works on dark hair since it doesn’t leave residue.  Bonus: All Living Proof products are sulfate-free, silicone-free and oil-free. Safe and formulated for color and chemically treated hair.

Application tip from Living Proof: If you see white residue, just wait 30 seconds and brush gently to remove.

You can find Living Proof Dry Shampoo at Sephora.

Aquaphor: Our Best Kept Secret Revealed

aquaphor hacks for busy moms

I’m a multi-tasking mama. I admit it. I listen to voicemails while I empty the dishwasher. I answer emails when I’m getting a blowout and I love beauty products that work as hard as I do. Aquaphor is a brand that sure does double-duty for moms. We all know that Aquaphor soothes little bums and keeps baby skin soft and protected. But how about the grown-ups in the house?

Did you know Aquaphor can be a beauty and baby life-saver? I’m sharing some of my favorite beauty hacks with this brand that has amassed a loyal cult following over the past 90 years.

aquaphor beauty hacks

My first life hack is lip care. This fall I’m loving bold bright lips. Many lipsticks and pencils can dry my lips out and ruin the look of the color. To maintain the healthy look of your lips and lock in color, slip on soothing and moisturizing Aquaphor Lip Repair. It’s perfect to keep your lips hydrated this winter.

life hack cuticle care

My next tip is about keeping your nails in great shape. To keep my nails in great shape, between manicures I smooth on Aquaphor Healing Ointment on my cuticles. It keeps them soft and now that the cold is settling into NYC it will provide a protective layer between me and the wind!

baby hack aquaphor

Dry skin doesn’t just affect grown-ups. Little ones also suffer during the winter months. To tend to delicate skin, make Aquaphor Baby a part of bath time. Using Aquaphor brings soothing comfort and effective relief to dry skin.

When the wind is whipping and you’ve bundled up the kids, don’t forget about little noses and cheeks. Baby’s mouth, chin and cheeks can become chafed and chapped in the harsh weather. Use Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment to help protect from wind and cold and prevent red, raw, irritated skin. Toss a tub in your diaper bag for all the outdoor adventures that await.

Aquaphor has been dubbed the unofficial “best kept secret” among beauty and parenting influencers like me. Use these hacks to give your beauty and baby care routines a boost. To get more information on unlocking the power of Aquaphor

Spring Beauty Trend: How to Wear a Bold Lip

Among the HOT beauty trends for spring are bold lips. The orange lip, in particular, is making waves and you want to make sure your pout is in great shape in order to rock this trend. Flaky orange lips will NOT make the hot list. Haha!

My lips tend to chap quite easily, so I have to work to keep them lipstick ready. In the past, I’ve used balm and a toothbrush to exfoliate my lips, and in a pinch, this is still a great, budget friendly method to use…But if you’re a beauty product and gadget junkie like myself, you’re always looking for new ways to perfect that pout.

bold lip, orange lip, beauty buzz, bliss, l'oreal, burt's bees, spring beauty trend

Two very important steps have to happen before you rock a super pigmented color…You must exfoliate and moisturize. Your lip color needs a smooth base to build on. As far as exfoliation goes, I mentioned my trick up above, but I’m really loving the Bliss fabulips ‘pout’-o-matic spa-powered lip perfecting system. Its gentle rotating head softly massages your lips and buffs away flakiness and dryness.

Once your lips are properly exfoliated, you’ll want to moisturize them and that’s where a good balm comes into play. I’m partial to Burt Bees’ natural products and if you’re looking for a subtle lip, their Lip Shimmers are great options!

As for the main event, I’m loving L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Extraordinaire Liquid Lipcolour in Orange Tempo. As I mentioned, orange lips are IT this season and this particular color glides on like a gloss, yet delivers BOLD color!

So, now that we have you ready to rock a bold lip this spring, head on over to our Beauty Buzz partners, Lulu of Simply Lulu Style, Janise of Mama in Heels and Alison of Sassy Moms in the City for some more beauty filled fun! You can link up your own beauty posts over at Lulu’s site this week. Have a beauty filled day!

Green beauty: Wet and Wild Black Mascara, Sally Hansen Insta-Dry, Simple Cleaning Wipes, Studio 5 Razors

Showing your St. Patrick’s Day is only about green crafts and green treats, it is also about showing your pride in a unique way. During a recent trip to Duane Reade in Downtown Brooklyn, I did just that by picking up some of my favorite green beauty trends.

Duane Reade.jpg

Looking around I was surprised at just how many green beauty items that I discovered. During this trip, I picked up some everyday essentials like my favorite makeup remover from Simple, green razors from Studio 5, green Skintimate Lotionized Shaving Cream, green colored mascara from Wet and Wild, green eyeshadow and something that I never tried (or thought I would try) – green nail polish from Sally Hensen. There were a slew more of green beauty products on-hand with Neutrogena and Aveeno green face wash, Venus’ razors and Cover Girl mascara.

At home, I had fun using these green beauty products as a way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and use beauty everyday beauty items that were so easy to find in my local Duane Reade. I had so much fun with the green nails that is a great (and easy) way to celebrate the luck of the Irish! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Spring Ready Skin

With spring’s official arrival on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about getting your skin prepared for it. Is it ready to bare? You’ll soon be shedding all those layers that this brutal winter has made necessary and showing off your skin. Don’t you want it to be in the best condition possible? Spring’s shorter sleeves and hemlines will be a lot more fun to wear if your skin is in great shape!

For me, having spring ready skin means that it needs to be properly moisturized. The dry winter air can be so hard on skin, so exfoliating and moisturizing my skin with good, rich creams and lotions are always part of my winter beauty routine…and that routine continues right up until the humidity and heat lead me to switch to a lighter body moisturizer.

Gud Red Ruby Groovy Boy Lotion / DeVita Shea Butter Brulee Lotion / Savannah Bee Honey Body Lotion / Shea Terra Pink Guava Pomegranate Double Shea Butter Smooth Lotion / Columbia Healing Cream / Noodle & Boo The Balm

I’ve rounded up some uber moisturizing lotions to help you get your own spring ready skin! Many of them are natural and organic products. I’ve been adding as many natural products as possible to my beauty routine. And a nice scent doesn’t hurt either. I can almost smell  Gud’s Red Ruby Groovy Body Lotion and Shea Terra’s Pink Guava Pomegranate Double She Butter Smooth Lotion by looking that them. I can attest to the softening properties of Columbia’s Healing Cream and Noodle & Boo’s The Balm. And I’m liking the look of DeVita’s natural Shea Butter Brulee and Savannah Bee’s Honey Body Lotion too…So many lotions, so little time. Haha!

So, are you ready to pick up your own skin saving lotion lovelies? You’ll be ready  to show off your super soft arms and stems in no time.

We would love it if you could join us, Lulu of Simply Lulu Style, Janise of Mama in Heels and Alison of Sassy Moms in the City for Beauty Buzz by linking up your own beauty posts over at Simply Lulu Style!

Get the Look: Oscars Beauty

I bet many of you watched the Oscars on Sunday night and fell in love with a bunch of the hair and makeup that the celebs were rockin’…Am I right? Well, today’s Beauty Buzz is all about how to get your own Oscars worthy look!

Let’s start with hair…I’ve always thought pixies were so darling…on the right head that is. My round, rather large pumpkin shaped head was not meant to sport a pixie. Haha! But you lovelies with delicate, fairy reminiscent noggins should seriously consider it. Here are the details on how celebrity hairstylist, Laini Reeves , gave Oscars host, Ellen Degeneres, her fierce ‘power pixie’:

  • Next, I used a blow-dryer while twisting the hair into small sections, creating a bend all over.
  • I then created volume on the crown and on the sides with a small round brush.
  • To finish, using the René Furterer MODELING PASTE, I tousled the hair a bit with my fingers to enhance the texture and to adjust the shape. Ellen was ready to electrify the stage at the Oscars.

J Law, AKA Jennifer Lawrence, is another whose pixie I love…She brought drama to the Oscars by adding some height to her pixie…Conair’s Pompadour Comb can help you recreate her pouf with minimal teasing and effort. And Scünci Beautiful Blends No Slip Grip Pins come in colors to match most anyone’s hair…So, no unsightly pins!

On the other side of the spectrum was Cate Blanchett’s soft, feminine waves…If you’re looking for a glam, date night look, this is it. To achieve Cate’s waves, try Conair AdjustaCurl rollers. They can adjust to any size to achieve your desired level of curl or waves. To complement her glamorous waves and glitzy gown, her makeup artist went for a neutral, nude lip. Smashbox Cosmetics Be Legendary Lipstick in Nylon Nude would give you a similar feel.

Another favorite was the stunning Lupita Nyong’o who loves her CLARINS HydraQuench Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm that she wears wherever she goes, including to the Oscars!. It provides a new lip care that provides intensive relief for damaged lips while adding a delicate pink texture to enhance natural lip radiance. The texture is also really soft and comfortable to pamper dehydrated lips and restore their toned, smooth and healthy appearance any time of year.

So, there you have it…Go forth and get glamorous! Thanks for joining us, Lulu of Simply Lulu Style, Janise of Mama in Heels and Alison of Get Your Pretty On  for the Beauty Buzz! We’d love it if you would link up your own beauty filled posts below!

la prairie Ice Crystals

winter skin care

Last month I received la prairie’s Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Cream and Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Dry Oil to test and try out. To say my skin has taken a beating this winter would be an understatement of epic proportions.

I have skied 35 days this winter already. I have been training for distance runs, I have had to walk the kids to school in arctic conditions. I am surprised I don’t look like Grandmother Willow from Pochahontas. While I am glad that age has brought me wisdom, I will skip the wrinkles and age spots and other signs of aging.

Right around the holidays I noticed more fine lines popping up on my face–the price of spending so many glorious days outside. I’m not willing to become a dewy-skinned, maiden enclosed in glass admiring my porcelain skin. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. I have been looking for skincare solutions to help. When this review opportunity came up I leapt at it. The la prairie Swiss Ice Crystal complex products retail for $600 when purchased at full price together. The big question: Are they worth it?

Four weeks later I have seen a glow return that can’t just be an accident. I have seen fading of brown spots AND the fine lines around my eyes looks smoother. I started to think I would need to start wearing foundation everyday to get back a smooth look–now I know it’s possible to get the skin of my 30’s–it’s just a matter of investing in skincare that uses science to fight aging.

Here’s how it works, after cleansing (I’ve also been using the la prairie cleanser and ) then I mix a drop of the Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Dry Oil with the Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Cream. I used my fingers to blend the products in the palm of my clean, dry hand, then I used my fingertips to apply the cream to my face and neck–avoiding my eyes. NOTE: don’t use this on your eyes, try the White Caviar serum instead.

The cream is thick–the oil smooths it out a bit. It’s a serious hydration solution. la prairie biotechnology researched the use of plant stem cells to “help renew the look of firmness and smooth the appearance of wrinkles, keeping you looking younger, longer.” Investing in good skin is important to me. Bottom line: This technology was easy to implement into my skincare routine and I noticed excellent results.

Miles high in the Swiss Alps, in a world of sheer ice crystals, beauty transcends time. Here, two seemingly fragile plants and one tiny algae survive and thrive in the harshest setting on earth, developing strategies to outwit the environment. It’s only fitting then that la prairie, with a heritage deeply rooted in Switzerland, harnessed these extreme-survivalist secrets into the Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Collection. The discovery combines some of the most sophisticated survivalist secrets

#NYFW with Avon

subtle edge, avon, lauren andersen for nicholas K

Heading behind the scenes is an exciting way to experience New York Fashion Week. As and Avon ambassador, I was invited to attend the Nicholas K Fall/Winter 2014 Runway Show. Avon was the official makeup sponsor for the show, and Avon Global Celebrity Makeup Artist Lauren Andersen created the makeup for the catwalk.

Lauren was a doll, she worked fast and smart to create a dramatic eye for the models. She focused on the lower lashes to make something called “the subtle edge.” Here’s what came down the runway.

nicholas K runway

Here’s Lauren’s video at the event:

When I talked to Lauren about what she created for Nicholas, she said she “wanted something edgy and cool.” The clothes were layered, urban and dramatic. Then there was the hair–jet black wigs with carved shapes. SHAPE. That was key to Lauren.

To start, Lauren said she loved the Ideal Flawless Foundation. It made the models’ skin glow. Then she used the Supershock gel eyeliner.  Lauren used brushes to smudge the liner and pulled it out from the lashes. Then she added a strip of fake lashes along the lower lashes. Finally she added Mega Effects Mascara (check out our video on that here)

The result? An upside down cat eye. My final question for Lauren, how the heck did you get those lashes on! Lauren said, “A steady hand and a pair of tweezers.”
