Statement Necklaces: How To Dress Up Any Outfit

A while back I found this gorgeous statement necklace at an antique store in a small harbor side town known for its collectibles. I spent my entire Christmas bonus on it. At the time, a very extravagant move for an only recently employed, young woman. I have worn it with everything from a strapless ball gown to a plain white tee, and you know what? When I wear it paired with a plain, white tee, it always gets noticed, not to mention, complimented.

To me, a statement necklace can be worn anytime, for any occasion, it is something a little special, a little different and is certainly a bold fashion statement. I shy away from the ever popular bib necklaces, and although I have seen some really beautiful ones, they don't have the much sought after (at least for me) timeless appeal. (I included one I found here by Kate Spade that is undeniably gorgeous.)

I also tend to (but not always!) avoid gold colored ones as unless you find quality "costume" jewelry, the piece may look cheap . Good "gold" costume jewelry doesn't look like real gold yet sits in a class all by itself, full of sophistication.

Having a statement necklace in your arsenal, is a fashion must-have. You can find a great statement necklace just about anywhere from high-end boutiques to bargain chain stores, not to mention my personal favorite, vintage or consignment shops. I will add that I found three from Anthropologie that I loved equally, and because I couldn't chose my fav, I included all three. I can always count on Anthropologie for a vintage inspired piece.

I spotted these fashionable NYC ladies making their own statement! You can't get the necklace on the left as it was handmade (beautiful, isn't it?) but the one our writer, @savvymomnyc is wearing is from a new line called, "Simply You".

Stick with what you like, but always make sure the only thing your necklace is making a statement about is ...YOU!
