I'll never forget my first baby register. Bottle warmers, a stroller that I didn't research and a random collection of clothes that were too small for my then 10-pound baby were on the top of my list. I was clueless when it came to what the must-have items were for my new baby, but after some experience and time I've been able to figure out what items are essential and what items are just a waste of money.
BABYBJöRN BabySitter Balance Infant Seat: I've used the same BabyBjorn bouncer with both of my daughters for over 5 years, and this has been amazing for calm gentle movements for newborns to giving me the luxury to shower. I love its three recline positions and comfortable seat. I also love how it folds so easily for travel.
Ergobaby Carrier: The beginning is all about the skin-to-skin contact, and my all-time favorite carrier for holding my daughters is the Ergo. Featuring comfortable straps and support for your baby and your back, Ergo carriers can also be wore right away with an insert and lasts until your child is three when you can then wear them on your back.
Cribs: We have had the same crib for the past few years, but we started out by using a co-sleeper by . For cribs I like the Room 365 Crib by Stork Craft and the Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 Convertible Crib that turns into a toddler bed.
Strollers: This can be a challenging piece of gear to put on a registry since models change so often, and your needs can be completely different than what a stroller has to offer. After testing out a half a dozen strollers (and counting), I really love the Britax B-Agile & B-Safe Travel System (also includes a car seat) that handles that tough city streets and offers comfortable positions for sleep. I also like it because you can use it right from the begininning by attaching the car seat to the base. When my daughters reached the toddler stage (around two and up), I like to use a lightweight umbrella stroller like those from McLaren or the Inglesina Swift Stroller.
Car Seats: While it seems like a joke that all you need a car seat to take home your baby from the hospital, it is one the most important pieces of safety gear that you will use continuously up until your child is 7 years old. To get started, I like the Britax B-Safe Infant Car Seat and the then Britax Advocate 70-G3 Convertible Car Seat for when your toddler reaches age two.
Diapers: Nothing fancy about this one, but I think it is essential since you don't want to worry about having to out to a store - especially in the beginning. I suggest getting a big box with some of favorite brands being Seventh Generation Free & Clear and Pampers for disposable and Charlie Banana Reusable Diaper for reusable diapers.
