How to Update Your Look on a Budget

If you’re the main orchestrator of your entire family’s lives and schedules, it’s easy to lose track of some things that are important to you, like taking time to keep yourself looking stylish. If you’re feeling like you need an updated look, you may be worried that it will cost you a lot of money but that’s not necessarily true. There are a few easy, affordable steps you can take - here are some ideas to get you started:

Invest in basics. If you are looking to revamp your wardrobe and are going to spend a bit more money on certain pieces in your closet, make sure to do it on items that will last a long time and not go out of fashion. A simple black dress will always be a good choice for a school function or a date night out and a great day bag will last you for years. [More from Best Beauty Buys Under $10]

Shop discount stores and outlets. There is a huge markup that exists in retail so there’s really no need for you to pay full price. Discount stores like Marshall’s and TJ Maxx sell a lot of great brand names at a fraction of the price and they have everything from outerwear to workout clothes to work wear. Outlets are also a great source of marked down items and even pricier brands like J. Crew, Gap and Banana Republic regularly run sales with large discounts. There’s no need to buy their clothes without a coupon!

Get some good accessories. Even if you just constantly rotate a few simple pieces through your wardrobe – jeans, a black sweater, a white t-shirt – you can change up your look by using accessories wisely. A simple scarf or pashmina can change the whole color of your outfit while necklaces and bracelets can move an outfit from plain to stylish or casual to dressy. [More from When to Save and When to Splurge]

Trade clothes with friends. If you have some fellow moms who are looking to update their wardrobe too, consider hosting a clothing swap so that you can get some new duds without spending any money. One woman’s trash could be another woman’s treasure!

Hit a teaching salon. If you’re in desperate need of a new hairstyle, consider trying out a salon where stylists are still in training. They are supervised by actual senior stylists and charge you considerably less so you’ll get a great haircut for a steal.

Check out YouTube. Finally, if you are looking to update your makeup, you can try stopping by a makeup counter at your local department store or Sephora for a makeup lesson but those typically require a minimum purchase. Instead, take a look on YouTube for some makeup tutorial videos and teach yourself some tricks for free. [More from 6 Reasons to Hire a Personal Shopper]

And, don’t get intimidated and think that you have to do everything all at once. If you make a few changes over time, it won’t be too overwhelming and it will be a bit easier on your wallet.
