How To Style a Tulle & DIY TUTU

tulle skirts, how to style tulle, fashion for moms, fashion questions answere

The last time I fell this hard for a trend, I was covered in head-to-toe neon and the date coincided with Duran Duran's first album. (Although last year's skinny jean was pretty fierce an attraction as well.)

Tulle – strictly for ballerinas and toddlers? I think not. There are many ways to ensure you look like lady-like and not a little girl. I donned three gorgeous examples of this poufy fairy princess skirt and found styling an easy as a twirl of my magic wand.

Full skirts are easy to wear (not to mention figure-flattering), but follow a few rules:

  1. Give yourself a waist, woman. Let your belt show off both the skirt's shape and yours.
  2. The right amount of fluff is key. Every layer of tulle means more body on your body. Don’t go too full if you're super curvy. Try a flare A-line instead.
  3. Change up your accessories based on time of day. During the day, keep jewelry light. At night, bring out the heavy hitting heels and patent leather clutches.

For an every day princess look, pair your tulle skirt with a simple chambray button down and brown gladiators to bring you back down to Earth from your cloud of tulle.

Here's the magic of just the right amount of shine with a pop of color from a patent clutch, along with a black sequin top and patent heels.

Tulle doesn't need to be white to be right. This black skirt plays nicely with a tan sequined tank and pointy black heels for any posh evening affair. The fru fru is balanced with a bad girl spiked clutch.

There's absolutely no need to pack away the pouf just because the summer's over. Transition into fall with an over-sized sweater in a warm autumn shade and cozy slouch boots.

Still begrudgingly believe that tulle only belongs on your little girl? Here are a couple of ways to style your Mini Me...

The first look (shown on the left) is very chic, perfect for when she's headed to a birthday Paris. I paired the skirt with sequined ballet flats and a flowy feminine top with a mirror image in tulle. Then of course, on the right, she's ready to hang with all those boys in her lace-up sneakers and tomboy T.
