When I found out I was pregnant for the first time, I was beyond elated, but a little part of me had the secret hope that I would be able to avoid those dreaded stretch marks I had so many mamas complain about. Unfortunately, genetics usually determine whether you wind up with stretch marks or not and my genetics determined that I would. So, I've since done a lot of research on how to fight the stretch marks I have.
My son was pretty big newborn...8 pounds and 11 ounces to be exact. And at a mere 5'4", I am by no means tall. I also happen to have a very short torso, so my large and in charge bambino had nowhere to go, but out. Even though, I faithfully lubed up my belly with cocoa butter, I still wound up with angry red lines snaking down my stomach. And a few more popped up with my second pregnancy.
Those stretch marks are a part of me now and are a reminder of the amazing things my body did...It brought two incredible little people into the world. That doesn't mean I haven't tried my hardest to make them fade a bit though. Haha! Luckily, there are some products on the market that won't erase your stretch marks, but will make them far less noticeable!
A product that I'm really excited about, derma e® Stretch Mark Crème is about to launch and will be available at dermae.com in the coming weeks! Participants in an eight week trial claimed to experience improved texture, smoothness and improved color. Although, my stretch marks have faded to translucent whitish marks, I'm definitely interested in improved texture.
There is also the long time favorite of new moms, Mustela Stretch Marks Double Action. This is a great product for expectant and new moms with newly developed stretch marks.. Not only does it claim to minimize new stretch marks, but it tauts improved skin elasticity as a benefit as well. So, it just might help with the prevention of stretch marks. I wish I had tried it when I was preggers!
And if you're game, it doesn't hurt to try to moisturize your growing belly. Even if it doesn't totally prevent stretch marks, at least you'll have super soft skin! L'Occitane Mom & Baby Balm has a cult following for its uber moisturizing benefits.
