The holiday cooking season has officially struck our house. While I love to cook, during this time of year the cooking gets a lot more sweet with baking cookies on the top of our list.
One of our other favorite sweet traditions is to make a gingerbread house. Normally I opt for those kits where everything is perfectly aligned and cut out for you to create your sugary house. But this year the girls and I decided to mix things up a bit and create our own gingerbread house.
Stocking up with food supplies at Target, we discovered everything we needed to complete the house. This included graham crackers, sprinkles, seasonal chocolates, marshmallows, DOTS, icing and much more!
Back at home my older daughter and I went to work -assembling and munching along the way. We didn't have a specific plan where we started by pasting icing on the graham crackers and placing them with another cracker to dry.

Once the crackers dried we added more icing and candy to decorate the house and basically created our own world. I loved this as a way for my daughter to let her creativity run free without any specific guidelines. It was also really fun for us to work together as we assembled and figured out the pattern of our house. We finished it with coconut flakes that we said was the snow and colored icing that was used to create a door and windows.
A perfectly imperfect house, we loved the experience of creating together all while enjoying one of our favorite traditions for the holiday season.
