We've already talked about our love our box wine here on Momtrends, but now there's another new way to transport your vino: in a can. I know what you may be thinking - wine in a can? But there are a number of wonderful benefits to wine in a can plus a growing number of canned wine options. So what do you say - ready to crack open a nice, cold....Chardonnay?

Saturday Sips Wine in a Can

Before we get to our taste-test, there are number of occasions where wine in a can is the perfect solution:

  • You're a wine-lover, but everyone else is drinking beer.
  • You're going to a beach/park/concert/etc that doesn't allow glass bottles.
  • You need a portable, compact wine source.
  • You are in a raft or innertube.
  • You're a trendsetter and love being the person that makes others ask "Wait - what is that? And where can I get one?"
Canned wine

We tested out four canned wine brands this week that offered a variety of reds, whites and rosés:

alloy-wine

Alloy Wine Works - offers a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Grenache Rosé in larger 500ml cans.

sophia-mini-wine

Sophia Mini from Francis Ford Coppola Winery - single-serving mini cans (just 187ml) of the bubbly Sofia Blanc de Blancs. Each pink can even comes with its own straw for sipping!

underwood-cans

Union Wine Co. Underwood - offering a Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, Underwood cans are the most readily available canned wine (our Trader Joe's carries them!)

lilawines

Lila Wines - choose from Provence Rosé, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, or Italian Pinot Grigio in colorful, pop-art cans.

Overall, the group favorite was the Alloy Wine Works Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Sophia Mini's were too carbonated for me, but did have good flavors and it was fun that they came with a little straw - a cute option for a girl's weekend or bridal shower. All that said, the wines were just ok. The whites definitely performed better than the reds likely because they were cold and refreshing regardless. While I'm glad to know canned wine is an option for those glass-free occasions, I'll be sticking to my favorite bottled wines for now.

So what do you think about wine in a can?

You can find other Saturday Sip inspiration in our cocktail archives or head on over to The Shopping Mama to see what they are pouring!
