Cold? Rainy? Snowy? Maybe the slight hint of some sniffles? It's time for a hot toddy. Even if you missed National Hot Toddy Day earlier this week, it's not too late to celebrate. Plus, you likely already have everything you need to make it on-hand. Today's winter-approved recipe is definitely delicious and guaranteed to warm you from the inside out, sniffles or not.
A hot toddy might do more than just make you feel better too - it may really help with your symptoms if you're sick. According to the Mayo Clinic, warm liquids like tea and, yes, hot toddies, can be soothing and help ease congestion, while lemon water with honey can "loosen congestion and help prevent dehydration." And Country Living UK writes that "honey and lemon is often included in cough and sore throat remedies as honey helps to lubricate and soothe the throat and lemon provides a dose of vitamin C. The alcohol in hot toddies gives a warming effect – that's what makes you feel better."
The basic hot toddy recipe is this: whiskey, boiling water, lemon juice, and honey, stirred around. I love how Maggie Lange describes it on Bon Appetit: "Each component has a purpose. Booze to relax, Vitamin C to cure, honey to soothe, heat to nuzzle your soul via your esophagus. It’s efficient, it’s powerful, it’s good at its job." Amen.
