Chronic pain is never fun. Expecting and post-partum moms are often saddled with hip and back pain resulting from added weight and pregnancy. Then there's nausea and insomnia. Acupuncture offers a drug-free option for healing what ails the modern moms. We recently paid a visit to the Giving Nature Center to find out more about acupuncture.

The space is filled with blonde wood and soothing colors. Think spa, not a sketchy yoga studio stuck in the 70s. The treatment rooms are lovely and peaceful—setting the right tone for treatment. In addition to acupuncture, the rooms are used for reflexology, massage and chiropractic treatments--but we're talking needles.

The therapist inserts a series of thin, tiny, sterile needles (really, they didn’t hurt!) I served as a guinea pig and let the owner place a few in my hand for testing. According to their literature, Acupuncture is a ancient holistic healing system from China. Each pin is strategically placed to relieve pain and discomfort. The needles "adjust and balance energy as it circulates through the body's meridians." Once the needles are inserted, simply close your eyes and relax. The next thirty minutes is your time to focus on healing. When the needles are removed they are tossed away—no cross-contamination issues.

Therapies have been known to work on infertility (but Momtrends promises nothing) as well as pain. An initial evaluation and treatment lasts up to 90 minutes and costs $150. Ongonig treatments range form $60 and up. They work with most insurance coverage and will make an effort to navigate the paperwork involved.
