Last week, Momtrends attended an advanced screening of Drew Barrymore's latest film, Big Miracle, a soulful movie that hits theaters today, February 3, 2012. Inspired by a true story, the movie will pull at your heartstrings while conveying what can happen when people from all walks of life band together to achieve a specific goal -- an amazing big miracle.
Drew Barrymore Big Miracle
In the movie, which is set in 1988, Adam Carlson (played by John Krasinki) is a small town reporter who cannot wait to escape the northern tip of Alaska in order to take his career to the next level and explore a bigger market. But, as he is about the bid farewell to the bitter cold of Alaska, the story of his career breaks.
Soon after, an oil tycoon, heads of state, and journalists eager to monopolize on the story that Adam broke, all makes their way to the frigid outpost as well. But Adam is mostly concerned with an outspoken environmentalist and animal-loving volunteer, Rachel Kramer (played by Drew Barrymore), who also happens to be his ex-girlfriend. Together they attempt to save a family of majestic gray whales, who are trapped by fast forming ice in the Arctic Circle.
As Rachel and Adam race against time, they rally up a mix of people from all walks of life -- Inuit natives, oil companies, and Russian and American military -- encouraging them to set aside their differences and free the whales. Saving the endangered whales soon becomes a shared cause for nations entrenched against one another and even leads to a momentary pause in the Cold War.

Will they succeed in saving the whales? Only time will tell!
After the heartfelt screening, along with other media personnel and fans, Momtrends sat in on a Q&A session with Ms. Barrymore herself. It was such a pleasure chatting with Drew, especially because she is very sweet, witty, and bubbly in person! Drew mentioned that this is a special role for her because of the importance of the message behind Blue Miracle.
There is one scene in the movie where Barrymore'??s character, Rachel, has to dive beneath the Alaskan ice to swim with the three trapped gray whales (although the actress doesn't actually dive with real whales for the scene). During this truly dramatic scene, Drew is required to emote her feelings through a huge pair of goggles. Although Drew mentioned that diving into the freezing body of water "felt like knives going through [her] body," she recalls it as "a very peaceful experience." And you can certainly see that as you watch her on the big screen. There is a sense of peace and tranquility that overtakes the entire scene. It is truly beautiful.
But it's not only that scene. The entire movie is beautiful. And message behind it "the encouragement to set differences aside in order to achieve a common goal" is a beautiful one. As I previously stated, it will pill at your heartstrings and will surely be enjoyable for the entire family.
Visit the movie's website for more information on this lovely film and to find it in a theater near you.
