Squeezing in Mom time during the holidays can be tricky. Most of us want to create meaningful memories for our children and this means burning the maternal candle at both ends. Every holiday I carve out an evening in December to see the Alvin Ailey Theater.
This is year number five that my friend and I have made a date for dance. We book the tickets months in advance so neither of us dare cancel. This plan is set in stone. Both ladies love dance and this group one of America's cultural treasures. Founded in March 1957, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater started as a group of young African-American modern dancers led by the eponymous leader.
Today, led by Artistic Director, Judith Jamison, AAADT has gone on to perform for an estimated 23 million people in 48 states and in 71 countries on six continents, including two historic residencies in South Africa. My favorite dance from the evening is always Revelations based on traditional spirituals--it make my heart sing to see it performed. This holiday I invite all the harried moms out there to seek some cultural inspiration. Be it theater, music or dance. Put some space on the calendar for grown-up fun.
