Got a budding designer in the family? Here's something to inspire them. A 28 year-old-student won the contest to come up with a modern scaffolding structure. We here at Momtrends are pleased that our sidewalks will be getting a makeover. Young-Hwan Choi beat out 133 other entries to win the international contest.

The goal: "to improve quality of life, reduce construction impacts on businesses, increase pedestrian safety and increase available space for pedestrians on sidewalks," according to the Mayor's Office. The so-called "The Urban Umbrella" will "complement the city's architectural beauty rather than take it away from it," said Mayor Bloomberg. Choi attends school at the University of Pennsylvania and scored $10,000 for the winning design. A prototype will soon be installed at a Lower Manhattan construction site--keep your eyes pealed and send us a photo when you see these on the street. Building owners won't be required to use new structures--but we think they'd be foolish not to.

Momtrends was not paid for this post.
