My husband calls on his way home from work every night with the same burning question: “What’s for dinner?” And, more often than not, my answer is something along the lines of, “Well, um, I could boil up some spaghetti real fast.”
To this, he scoffs. (I can all but actually see the eye roll happening on the other side of the phone.) In my husband’s not-so-humble opinion, spaghetti and jarred marinara sauce (even if it’s the expensive, gourmet kind!) does not a satisfying meal make.
Now, don't get me wrong. He's an equal opportunity hands-on kind of guy. He doesn't expect me to whip up a fancy feast every evening. He's just hoping that one day I'll at least order a pizza or some Chinese before he walks in the door, ravenous and exhausted. Alas, that's usually not the case. But, at least once a week, he'll come home to a big ole bowl of spaghetti--much to his chagrin.
The thing is: unlike my picky partner, I actually enjoy the occasional bowl of well-sauced al dente noodles. And it’s probably the only meal my children and I will actually agree on and eating together. It’s fast, it’s easy, and it’s kid-friendly--so it’s a no-brainer in my book. But, for my husband’s culinary sake, I’m trying to broaden our horizons, expand or pasta palettes, and put a new twist (and a twirl!) on our weekly spaghetti dinners.
