Fun Summer Read: Murder by the Minutes

Our very own book editor, Jennifer Vido, has just released her latest book, Murder by the Minutes and had the chance to catch up with her about the third installment to her mystery series.

Can you tell us what inspired you to write the Social Lite Mystery Series? Have suspense novels always been your favorite genre?

Back in 2005, I was working as a freelance book reviewer and columnist. I had the opportunity to interview numerous New York Times bestselling authors and soon-to-be literary stars. I met former lawyers, teachers, and even soccer moms all with inspiring stories to tell who had the courage to take a leap of faith to follow their dreams. I couldn’t help but be inspired to follow in their footsteps. So, I took a stab at becoming a published author. It took me one year to write my first manuscript, Par for the Course, and four long years to sell it. I never gave up! My favorite genres have always been romance and mystery, so I decided to combine the two to create the Piper O’Donnell Social Lite Mystery series.

How do you personally relate to your protagonist Piper? She's quite the fashionista! Are there bits of your own style in her or were you inspired by anyone's style in particular?

Piper and I share a love for all things Lilly Pulitzer and the color pink. She is definitely driven by her sense of style, as am I. Throughout my series, I pepper the storylines with tidbits of fashion trends and tips. I like to stay current on what designers certain celebrities are choosing to wear for I can easily work that into the framework of my mystery novel. I often use descriptive fashion verbiage to help my readers better visualize the characters in their heads. Fashion is definitely a focal point in all my books.

I found reading Murder by the Minutes to be a lovely escape from my normally jam packed days. Was that your intention…to provide your reader with a fun little mental vacation?

It’s always sunny and 75 degrees in Piper’s world, so to speak. As moms, our lives tend to be fairly overscheduled. Finding snippets of time to read a book is rather challenging, to say the least. So, I wanted to create a fictional world filled with laugh-out-loud scenes, trendy fashion tips, and lots of sexy encounters between my protagonist and her hottie hunk, Rusty O’Brien. The purpose of my series is to provide a fun escape for moms while waiting in carpool line!

The next installment of the series will be getting underway shortly! I have just completed outlining the list of characters and major plot developments for Dying to Wed. The story will pick up where Murder by the Minutes left off. There is a wedding to be planned. Let’s keep our fingers crossed Piper can make it to the altar without stumbling upon a dead body!
