Moving Tips for the Summer

Ninety percent of the 32 million Americans moving each year do so during June, July and August. Indeed, summer is the most popular time to move for most people, after all, the weather is perfect and the kids can start the school year with their new peers. So, if you have to move this summer, here are some tips to help you make the transition as easy as possible.

Plan Ahead for Your Moving Day:
As soon as you're sure that you are moving, start planning. Start looking for reputable moving companies, as you want to make sure that they will be able to put you on their schedule. You don't want to be left behind because you didn't book your moving company early enough, nor do you want the added expense of storage for your things or hotel rooms for your family because you couldn't get the moving date you want.

Organize Your Packing and Unpacking
When you're in a rush, you'll be tempted to just shove everything you own into boxes and suitcases and then cross your fingers. Not only is this disorganized, but you'll be wasting a lot of time unpacking. So, make sure you organize your packing and unpacking. For example, one good rule of thumb is to pack room by room. Go to one room first, say, your bedroom and start packing everything here before moving on to the next room. Make sure you label each box with the corresponding room so that your movers will know where to place them. Once they get to your new home, unpack each box one by one, or else, you'll be tempted to leave half empty boxes lying around.

Hold a Moving Sale:
If you hire a professional mover, most likely you'll be charged per pound of stuff you have to move. So, to lower your costs of moving, get rid of the things you don't need by throwing, recycling, donating or selling them. This will not only lighten your load, but you can make a bit of money (or a tax break if you donate them) before you move. For tips on throwing a great garage sale read this.

Have Your Car Checked or Confirm Travel Arrangements:
Along with other movers, you'll be battling it out on the roads or airport with vacationers, so you need to be prepared. If you're going cross country in your own vehicle, make sure you have your car checked , that means the engine, oil levels, tires etc. to prevent on the road breakdowns, which is not just inconvenient but could cost you a lot of money. If you're traveling by plane, confirm your bookings and get to the airport early, two to three hours before your flight especially if you have a lot of luggage or have small children and/or pets.

Check the Weather on Moving Day:
Check the weather a day or two before moving day so you can prepare. If the temperature's set to shoot through the roof, then you should prepare to dress properly and perhaps you can even make some refreshing lemonade to cool you and the moving guys off.
