Every now and then I need a reminder about how magical the theater can be. The Tony Award winning Broadway production of MATILDA THE MUSICAL was the perfect outing to reignite my love for musical theater.
MATILDA has won 47 international awards, of course we'd heard the buzz about the show and watched the Tony clips.
But seeing really is believing. It's expensive and takes some effort to get to the theater. Embrace it my friends! My eight-year-old is a fan of Roald Dahl's books. We got hooked with James and the Giant Peach and have continued to work our way through his twisted and wonderful world of books. She'd read the book and adored the story of the plucky girl who set out to make things right (or at least better).

Our family has been through many wheels over the years. Since we are mostly an urban family, our kids found scootering the best way to get to school. My kids got bigger, so I’ve been researching options for them. Now it's time for an upgrade to our wheels and we've got some ...read more

We dressed up and hopped on the A train to the Shubert theater. The stage is tucked into a Broadway Scrabble-like board of letters. When the lights when up and the pint-sized actors sprung into action I couldn't decide where to focus--on my daughter's eyes dazzled by the live spectacle or on the stage packed with talented sprites.
Who is the show for? I'd say children 7+. Younger ones might appreciate the playfulness, but I'm not sure the dark nature of the plot is ideal for those unexposed to the world of baddies and villains. Like the book, this story is full of rich gray area. Matilda is a heroine to be sure, but a naughty, sassy one.
There are four young girls bringing Matilda to life. The night we attended Milly Shapiro played Matilda. She must be about 8 or 9, which packs more meaning when you've got a child the same age. This little actress was able to conjure the hurt, frustration and anger that Dahl endows his character with--and she did it with spunk! The entire cast was fantastic, with another nod to Chris Hoch who played Mrs. Trunchbull in drag. Bravo everyone.
What'll you get out of the show? Songs you'll remember (we're still humming, "even if you're little you can do a lot"), a set that will delight and a show that will remind you of the power of the imagination.
