This summer we started a vegetable garden for the kids. We visit the farmers market each week, Making healthy food choices is a priority for our family. I've tried to make food exciting and fun for the kids. I want to know food can empower them, fuel them and also be a fun way to share family time.
The girls helped pick what to plant--basil, tomatoes, lettuce and swiss chard (ok that last one was my pick). We've watered, weeded and harvested. I feel like this process has not only kept us close as a family, but it has promoted healthy eating habits.
Salad is a lot more exciting with tomatoes and lettuce from your own garden. We involve the kids in every step of the meal planning process. We plan the week's menu, We shop. We cook. We clean up.
Once summer is over we'll be back to our regular routine. There won't be the vegetable garden. While vegetables will still be important to us, there is a way to insure the girls get the vitamins they need. During the school year, they will get plenty of exercise and we keep them on a regular sleep schedule, but I like knowing I can give them an extra line of defense against sickness.
