Want the best swim classes in NYC for your kids? It's going to cost you a $1 a minute--but you're going to get a bucketful of value, fun and instruction for your investment. We've spent the past two weeks staking out the new Imagine Swimming flagship location in Tribeca and we've got a full report.
We were skeptical. Could these classes really be as good as everyone says? Are they that much better than the Y? What's so special? Momtrends is here to tell you we are now believers too. We met with Casey, one of the owners, and got the scoop. Imagine is all about making the swimming experience a positive one. They keep the classes small and try to keep continuity by using the same instructors week after week. In addition to the flagship, Imagine partners with pools to hold lessons. They train the instructors and rent space in pools all over Manhattan and Brooklyn.
New students sign up in the fall and the classes run year round. That's the catch, it's hard to get into a good time slot. So be sure to get on a wait list and keep calling until something opens up. Once you're in, there's a monthly charge and you're automatically renewed. There is only one makeup per month--usually on weekend. We advise NOT missing classes, it's expensive and inconvenient.
What we love? The space and the teachers. Clean, warm (literally, the water was in the 80s) and roomy, this is a great place to hang out for mom, sitter or younger siblings. Our little swimmer can't get enough time in the pool. Her class runs 40 minutes and she's swimming or playing the entire time--no "wall sitting" involved whatsoever. The shower and changing facilities are excellent. Plenty of lockers, clean showers and space to spread out with all the gear.
You'll need to bring a towel, cap and swimsuit. That's it. Imagine provides goggles, flippers and water toys galore to make learning a blast. So we're forking over the full price (no Momtrendsnyc discounts yet--we'll keep you posted) and getting on a subway each week...the classes are that good.
