Fit Mom Profile: Jenny Fenig

When you see your mission as "unleashing the peaceful power of women to create inspired lives" you can't exactly sit around munching Doritos and watching reality tv. You've got to live and breathe your work. Jenny Fenigis a yoga-inspired life/career coach to women and moms whom lives and breathes her work.

This New York mom uses her blog and one-on-one coaching sessions to help moms be the best they can be. A true mompreneur, she has built her business around her biggest priority: her family.

Fitness goal for 2010: As a yogi, I would like to increase my time in an inversion called forearm stand (pincha mayurasana) from 5 to 30 seconds. I know that 30 seconds may not seem like a long time to non-yogis, but it feels like a lifetime to me. I've been working on this pose for 2 years ... it teaches me a lot.

I'd also like to ski this winter. I'm a novice (skied about 4 times in my life), but love trying new things (plus, I have some ski gear that I want to break in!). Skiing is an extreme metaphor for life. Check out my recent blog post for my recent learnings on the Colorado slopes.

Biggest fitness accomplishment: Completing my 200-hour vinyasa yoga teaching certification in December 2007. That training started a huge personal growth experience for me ... and gave me the courage to (finally!) quit my corporate job, get certified as a coach and start a business as a yoga-inspired life/career coach to women. I teach the philosophy of yoga (the purpose of yoga is to achieve mastery over the mind) through my style of powerful coaching. I encourage anyone who is thinking about getting certified as a teacher to do it ... and anyone who is contemplating trying yoga (no matter now inflexible you are!) to do it. Yoga opens you up to SO MUCH. Get ready ... because you're in for the adventure of a lifetime.

BOTH! I like to run alone (outside, preferably ... but I'll go to a treadmill at the gym in frigid temps). I like practicing yoga in a yoga studio with a class. The sense of a community at a yoga studio is amazing.

You'll find me at a yoga studio. Also, I much prefer practicing yoga at a yoga studio vs. a gym. Totally different vibe. I encourage you to find what works best for you.

My favorite time of the day to workout:

During the week = Lunchtime. Breaks up my day ... and I can schedule client calls and other biz in the morning or afternoon.
Weekend = Morning. Great way to get started ... and typically my husband can watch my son so I can make it to class.

My sneaky fitness trick:

BREATHE! Seriously, conscious breathing will change your life. Right now, stop and take a DEEP breath, filling up ALL of your lung capacity. Now take a juicy exhale and say "AHHH." More relaxed? Why I workout: Calms my mind and strengthens my resolve to go out and live my dreams! Plus, it's a surefire way to feel good about yourself and make any issues you're facing seem less overwhelming.

Favorite fitness brand (shoe, apparel, etc.): Lululemon! They make the best, most flattering apparel for yoga and other physical activities. The clothes are great for everyday wear, too ... ideal for a work-at-home mom like me.

I'd like to try _____________ this year to keep my routine fresh.

I'd like to try weaving in some Kundalini yoga into my life. I took a Kundalini class with an amazing teacher named Gurmukh last year at a yoga conference. It was an AMAZING experience, an intense mind-body-spirit workout. I'd like to go deeper into that style of yoga.

Best workout song ever: "Open Your Eyes" by Snow Patrol. When that song comes on, I get so fired up. Woo hoo!

A typical week's worth of workouts looks like:

Yoga = 5 days/week (3 in a studio, 2 at home)
Running = 1 day/week (when I can run outside ... as I really don't like treadmills)
Meditating/affirmation reading/journaling = every day. This is my success secret! Spend a few minutes quieting the mind, focusing, setting your daily intention, and reminding yourself of how powerful and beautiful you are ... watch what happens. Magic.

I stay motivated by:

- Remembering how good I feel after I exercise. Investing 1 - 2 hours = MANY hours of feeling healthy and prepared to PLAY BIG in life. Pretty good ROI in my opinion.
- I color code my calendar and green is the color for exercise and self-care. At the start of the week, I schedule in my exercise time and conduct business and life around this schedule.
- The exciting opportunity to show my son the importance of taking care of your health and peace of mind.
- Signing up for yoga workshops that allow me to go deeper into my practice and continuously learn about myself an
d how I approach life.
