The top of the lineEpson 835 ($299.99) all-in-one is not to be missed. This printer is ideal for those who want style (tech gear can be trendy too!), quality, efficiency, and simplicity.

If you're in the market for a new printer look no further. I must admit, I am not a "techie" and machines with lots of gadgets are somewhat intimidating, so when I was asked to review the Epson 835, I was a bit concerned. Not anymore!

First off, this printer is compact, making it ideal for apartment living or small work spaces. I was most impressed by the sleek look and host of features. The Epson 835 combines a color printer, a flatbed scanner and a fax in a package featuring a 7.8 inch touch panel (including a 3.5'? LCD display) and wireless connectivity. I have the printer tucked neatly on a shelf under one of the bedside tables; not having to connect the printer directly to the computer via a cable provides this luxury.

Setup was very simple; in only a few steps I had the printer unpacked, the date/time set, cartridges and paper loaded and was connected to my wireless network. The ink cartridges were some of the most simple I have ever installed -simply insert each of the six color coded cartridges in its assigned slot and listen for a click. Joining my wireless network was also a breeze, using the control panel on the printer I was able to view all available networks, choose the correct one and enter my password.

Setup on my iMac was also painless. I was prompted to choose the type of connection (wireless, direct to the computer via a USB cable or via an Ethernet) and any optional software I wished to install, clicking '??Next'?? a few times and I was done.

I will be using the printer mostly for printing photos and this is an area that the Artisan 835 excels. I was amazed at the quality and speed of photos printed on Epson'??s Ultra Premium Photo Paper. A 4'?x6'? print was produced in 10 seconds! Only later did I realize that I wasn'??t even printing using the highest quality setting, the speed per print obviously declined but the clarity improved noticeably.

Another feature that I love is the ability to print directly onto blank CD'??s. I make movies of the kids for my husband'??s family back in New Zealand and having a printed CD or DVD will give the gift a professional look and feel.

The Epson Artisan 835 also lets you print photos directly from your digital cameras memory card or from an external storage device such as a USB flash drive. Simply insert your memory card or flash drive into the slot on the front of the printer, you then have the option to print all or scan through each image and assign the number of copies you want printed. Each image is displayed in color on the 3.5'? LCD panel so you know exactly what you are printing.

Another great feature is the ability to print directly from my iPhone and iPad using the Epson iPrint app, a free download from Apple'??s app store. Once installed, I was able to select the wireless printer, choose paper size and orientation (landscape or portrait) and then scan through the photos in my iPhoto library, select one and click print '?? couldn'??t be easier.

The Artisan 835, priced at $299.99 at Epson.com or Amazon gets an A+ from us.
