This mighty cold weather has us thinking about the slopes. And we stumbled upon a great day trip for beginning skiers. Thunder Ridge in Patterson NY has a "Ski Train" that is perfect for NYC families.
Ride the Metro-North Ski Train from NYC and then hop on the FREE shuttle to Thunder Ridge from the Patterson, NY train station. This program runs Saturdays, Sundays, Christmas Week, Martin Luther King Day and Presidents Week.
Heres how it works .visit Metro-North on-line or go to any ticket seller or machine at Grand Central Station and ask for the Thunder Ski package. This is your discounted combo train and lift ticket. Take the train to the Patterson, NY train station. The free shuttle picks up at the station on weekends & holiday periods at 9:30am, 11:30am and 1:30pm. Visit Metro-North and buy your tickets.
The ski hill is only one mile from the train station and theyll return you to the station when your fun is done and you can have a relaxed ride back on the train to NYC. We're guessing the kids are going to fall asleep on the way back. Now we're not saying this is Chamonix, but it is a great place to start without blowing out a ton of money to take the family to Vermont or Colorado.
Thunder Ridge is a small mountain--the kids won't get lost and a gentle introduction to skiing. They offer half-day sessions for the kids. This is a fully supervised 3 hour, drop-off program for the kids. It starts at age 4 and is offered Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM and includes lunch. Designed to allow students to get lots of mileage and develop some muscle memory.
