We're all about essentials--sure we want you to create a stylish and chic nursery--but we also want you to preserve your sanity and your 401K plan through the process of bringing home a baby. Fisher-Price is hosting a group on Babycenter'??s Community all about advice. And they came to us to see if we'd add our voice. Never short on opinions we put together a "Must Have" list for baby's first months. And we're going to mention a few of our mistakes along the way. Because no mom is perfect and if you can't laugh at your mistakes--well parenthood is not going to be an enjoyable ride.
Sling or baby carrier
Why: well there aren't enough hours of the day to simply gaze into the eyes of your beautiful new baby AND cook a meal, shower and maybe even get a few errands done. Baby carriers allow you to bond with baby while getting about the business of life.
Mistake: My husband and I spent far too much time obsessing about the stroller in the first year. Yes, we used the stroller, but 9 times out of 10 we opted for the baby carrier during months 0-6.
Why: cribs are enormous compared to the size of an infant.Bassinets aren't just lovely to look at--they also give baby a secure safe place to sleep that is easy to transport.
Mistake: My husband and I spent hours assembling the crib during my last week of pregnancy. In hindsight this could have waited for MONTHS. Our first daughter ended up sleeping in a right-sized bassinet until she was about 4 months old.
Why: Because dressing baby is so much fun. While Baby Gap is fine, we think giving the little tykes a look that's individual and fun. Dress them as you please before they have strong opinions about clothing!
Mistake: Saving the "good stuff." Those little munchkins grow so fast. Don't save clothing for special occasions. If you've got a red cashmere sweater for your little man--toss it on him every chance, snap some pictures and don't obsess about cleanliness. I regret all the pretty dresses that only got worn once.
My other words of wisdom for you all going through this the first time. Don't forget to smell the roses and take video. I know these may seem at cross purposes. Some of my favorite memories from having infants involve aimless walks with just the two of us and the late night breastfeeding sessions when it seemed like we were the only two individuals awake in NYC. At the time, I may have felt exhausted, but now I feel nothing by fondness for those moments. And I do wish I had more baby videos. So if you've got a techie grandparent who wants to pull out the camcorder go for it! Just insist they edit and label all the videos to make them easy for you and the kids to view.
