We got a behind the scenes look at Angelina Ballerina's new stage show this week. Our favorite little mouseling started out as a book by Katherine Holabird then PBS and Hit Entertainment turned her into a hit TV show and now she's got a live musical premiering in NYC this fall. We got a behind-the-scenes look at the show last week.
As a treat, we took our Broadway-loving 5 y.o. to see the first "read-through" rehearsal at the Vital Theatre on NYC's Upper West Side. The energy was electric--this was the first time the actors and producers and supporting artists had gotten together. First we saw a peek at what the costumes would look like (think pink). Then a look at the stage design (more pink). Then show time.
The actors read through the script and the music director sang all the tunes (the actors hadn't learned the music yet). The script centers around Angelina starting at Camembert Academy. There's tons of giggles, music and DANCE! It's a positive message about hard work and friendship--with enough sophisticate humor to keep parents engaged too. The generous cast posed for pictures with me and Jessica Shyba (Momma's Gone City).
In our opinion, live theater is a wonderful activity for kids. It celebrates music, movement and teaches kids the wonder of make-believe. Whether you're in NYC, LA, Chicago or any town with a local theater company, buy tickets and expose your kids to the arts early. You won't regret it.
Can't wait to see the dress rehersal in a few weeks. Stay tuned for more Angelina news soon. For tickets visit: www.vitaltheatre.org/angelinaballerinathemusical --the show starts October 2 and tickets start at $29.50.
