A Minute with Mandy: September Books

Everyone is constantly looking for books to expand their library, but maybe it's time to get rid of some (those cardboard books that no one looks at, the 2nd copy of that novel you still haven't finished, etc). Do some Fall-Cleaning and make way for some eye-catching books that are breaking the mold. Out with the old and in with the new!

The Tooth: This gripping story about a little girl named Marissa sheds light on reality and gives us a child's perspective of the world around us. Normally, I'd vote for the sweet tale about a girl meeting a fairy, but there's something special about how Avi Slodovnick doesn't ignore the truth that is all around us. While he still focuses on our main character, he adds a touch of humanity and when you're finished reading, you feel a sense of humility and pride all at once. It might be a little heavy for you, but it doesn't have to be for your child. It will provoke some questions, but ones that need to be answered. All in all, this is not your average 'tooth' book.

We've read a story about aSpoon, (and if you haven't, you gotta) but here comes sweet little Spork. He doesn't quite know where he belongs. Is he mostly Fork or is he mainly Spoon? This is a lovely story about self-discovery and finding your place, even if it means making it yourself. The illustrations are fun and you can't help but reminisce about the days when all you used to eat with was a spork.
