Snacking is inevitable when you have kids. I find that my kids are super active, but also equally hungry. To squelch any meltdowns, I try to be prepared with wholesome and healthy snack options, and one of my new favorites is Pure Bar. As a natural snack option made with organic ingredients, Pure Bars are also gluten-free, vegan, raw, and kosher - making them a great option for life on-the-go.
To learn more about the company, I had the chance to interview founder, Veronica Bosgraaf, who spoke of their two new products, Ancient Grains Bars and Fruit Snacks (Fruit & Veggie Strips/Fruit Sandwiches) as well as how the company was started. As a passionate and health-conscious mom, I love learning about the mission of the company as well as their exciting focus on health and wellness.
Momtrends: Can you talk about why you wanted to start Pure Bar. What inspired the idea?
Veronica: I founded Pure in 2006 when my daughter decided to become a vegetarian at age 6. I was making a pie crust for my family out of dates and added a little cocoa powder and realized how good it was and decided to add protein and other omegas to it to give to my kids. They loved them and I realized I could hide a lot of other healthy ingredients in there and my kids would eat them.
My mission has always been to deliver healthy snack solutions and nutritious, innovative foods for the whole family by using simple, wholesome, real ingredients that nourish the body and mind. Every bar or product I create is packed with antioxidant-rich fruits, heart-and-brain-healthy nuts, grains, organic fiber, and organic protein, and they are organic, gluten-free, non-gmo verified, vegan and kosher.
Momtrends: How do you decide what flavor combinations and ingredients to use in the bars?
Veronica: We always listen to our customers and look for interesting new organic ingredients. Everything we use has to adhere to our high standard of organic, non-GMO, vegan, and gluten free. I admit that I also always ask my kids their opinions and have them taste test everything I make.
Momtrends: What are some of the challenges in creating a vegan bar?
Veronica: I think many companies have trouble getting their healthy products to taste good. We have always had a huge advantage when it comes to the taste of Pure Bars because I had to make them good enough for a six year old to eat! That's why so many adults LOVE our snacks. One of my good friends used to eat a donut every morning. He switched to a Cherry Cashew Pure Bar simply because he thought it tasted better than his donut. We take pride in being able to make really healthy clean food taste amazing.
Momtrends: What has been the reaction of the bars to consumers?
Veronica:People ask me how I grew my business and for Pure one of the reasons it grew so quickly and continues to grow is because it is a phenomenally delicious snack that really fills a need. Since day one consumers have responded positively to our bars. When you make a terrific product, word spreads, people talk, people share and business grows. It's a very fun product to sell because it truly makes people's lives a little brighter. That is why we have decided to expand our product line into Pure Fruit Snacks. My kids were always asking for fruit rolls and snacks and I felt we could do it better at Pure. So we now have Pure Fruit & Veggie Strips and Pure Fruit Sandwiches that are not made with any preservatives and almost a whole serving of fruit for the day.
Momtrends: What is your favorite product?
Veronica: I am obsessed with the new Chocolate Chunk Ancient Grains Bar. When we set out to create an ancient grain bar I wanted something decadent and rich. I have to say that I think we nailed it. I cant stop eating them and they are a complete protein too.
Momtrends: What are some tips for families that are seeking a healthier way to eat. What are some of the best ways to do so.
Veronica:A good friend of mine once said "you don't have to take the whole bottle of aspirin" small steps are key. And the beautiful thing about embracing a more plant based diet is that your body will start to crave those foods instead of the junk. Find fruits and vegetables you love and eat those as your indulgence. For me a huge bowl of guacamole is way superior in flavor than a huge bowl of ice cream. I find myself craving food like juicy mangos and roasted veggies with olive oil and sea salt and I always give in to those cravings!
