A few months ago Momtrends had the pleasure to attend a MOMS for TOMS Style Your Soles Party where I had a fantastic time decorating shoes with my daughter as I learned about this company and their amazing mission. Their one for one mission was created to give a new pair of shoes to a child in need. I was really struck by this mission since I was used to hearing about companies that gave back a small portion of their proceeds but never one that actually matched one. And this is not just a one-time match but a company-wide initiative that has become a movement in kindness, courage and compassion.

After this event, I was given a copy of Blake Mycoskie's book, Start Something that Matters. As the founder of TOMS, I was excited to learn more about his journey and essentially how heembodies the mantra, "Love your work, work for what you love, and change the world'??all at the same time."

His journey to starting TOMS began when he meet children in Argentina and learned that they had no shoes to protect their feet. Having no shoes often leads to infection, sores, cuts and disease, soMycoskie decided to create TOMS - a company with a radical idea to give back. In the book, Mycoskie shares this simple moment and how it prompted him to take action as well as what he learned from other charitable groups. The book also talks about making these changes now and not focusing on what you don't have to live the life you want, but rather, focus on doing what matters the most, which can lead to "profit, passion, and meaning all at once'??right now." At the heart of this is Mycoskie's six simple keys to transform your life by discovering who you are as well as how to overcome fear and doubt and how to incorporate giving into every aspect of your life. It is a self-help book without being preachy, but rather, it operates as a guidebook on how to live and have a better life by doing what matters.

The book also talks about the company's incredible '??One For One'? movement that has allowed them to not only provide shoes but also to customize them based on a child'??s terrain and environment such as by crafting shoes with thicker and wider soles as well as a cold-weather shoes and black shoes. As of September 2010, this has allowed TOMS to donate and craft1,000,000 pairs of shoes to children in 23 countries around the world and they aren'??t slowly down anytime soon. In addition to their '??One for One'?? initiative, TOMS also raises awareness through several events such as One Day Without Shoes where they ask people to take off their shoes to highlight the fact that millions of children grow up without shoes.
