Rebus Fun with Valorie Fisher

Image placeholder title

Valorie Fisher has a new book out--The Fantastic 5 & 10¢ Store--that brings back the amusing rebus. Forgot what a rebus is? It's a puzzle where you decode a message consisting of pictures representing syllables and words. We got to sit in on a book reading with the illustrator and learn about the creative energy that went into this work and to try our hand at a few collage crafts.

Valorie gathered a group of young kids in her neck of the woods goers to share her book. The story centers around an old-time store and the eccentric family that runs it. The book combines vivid illustrations and rebus text. Buy The Fantastic 5 & 10¢ Store on Amazon ($17.99).

After sharing the book, Valorie told us all of the painstaking (and fun!) work of crafting the collages that work as illustrations. The layered works of art were carefully crafted with attention to the tiniest details (such as a postman's letters). Since she found joy in the collage, she brought along all the supplies to have her young fans try it out.
