Momtrends and our West Coast blogging pals recently gathered for a day with the funnest sport at the 2014 National Swimming Championships in Irvine, CA.
Sponsored by the USA Swimming SwimToday program, the event kicked off with an exciting behind-scene look at the sport's highest level of competition from the ready room to the starting block and the autograph booth. The National Championships host the best-of-the best (Phelps, Lochte) in swimming (based on times, not age) to compete for international ranking in team spots.
Following the tour, we joined Dara Torres for an informative and inspirational luncheon. Dara, a mom and five-time Olympian, got involved in SwimToday (a campaign to encourage more kids to join swim as a sport) as a means of educating parents about the common misconceptions of swimming and promoting the benefits of swimming: fun, fitness, friendships, self-confidence, teamwork, goal-setting, time management, lifelong participation, swimming’s many health benefits and low rate of injury. Dara summed it up by saying, “You aren’t sitting on the bench or on the sidelines when you are part of a swim team”.
During Dara’s talk kids enjoyed being creative with SwimToday activities.
Next, the bloggers and their children enjoyed one-on-one time with Dara, including a photo op and a private swim lesson that ended in a fun race with coach Dara cheering on the swimmers.
SwimToday was founded in 2012 in collaboration with ten industry partners, including USA Swimming. While touting the “fun” of swimming, SwimToday also provides online tools for parents to help locate swim clubs and local pools in their communities. Many parents commonly report lack of access to a nearby pool, while research shows that 82 percent of households actually have a pool within 10 minutes of their residences.
Disclosure: This event was sponsored by USA Swimming. Thank you for a once in a lifetime unforgettable experience!
