TheDukan Diet first made it on the radar in the U.S. when it was reported that Kate Middleton and her sister, Pippa used it to drop pounds for the royal wedding. Developed by Dr. Pierre Dukan, the diet includes a high-protein, low-fat and low-carbohydrate diet that is designed for healthy eating and lifelong management.
Although the diet became an overnight sensation - thanks to Kate Middleton - Dr. Dukan has actually been helping people lose weight for over 40 years and professes in his book that "you will never feel hungry" through a four-phase approach to understanding food and eating.
At a recent cooking demonstration with Dr. Dukan, I had the chance to learn more about the diet and sample some of the yummy recipes from new The Dukan Diet Cookbook. Featuring over 350 recipes, I tried the quick and easy shrimp soup, a cod and a flourless chocolate cake. With a focus on flavors and rich ingredients, I loved preparing and tasting the food that was both satisfying, rich and enjoyable.
When speaking with Dr. Dukan I really liked hearing about the differences in eating in the French culture to eating in America where he noted, "American's eat on the go. It is not like that in France." Adding, "we take time to savor and enjoy our food. There is no rush." He also pointed out that families should eat together and sit a table (as opposed to sitting by a TV), which encourages conversation and enjoyment of food.
As a diet itself, the Dukan System focuses on two steps to lose weight, and two steps to keep it off, the diet focuses on oat bran that is designed to help lower cholesterol and create the feeling of fullness. In Phase One or the Attack Phase dieters will be able to calculate their true weight (a realistic and healthy one) that they can attain on the plan and maintain for their entire life. This begins by eating 68 high-protein foods for 2-7 days.
In Phase Two or the Cruise Phase dieters can add 32 vegetables back into their diets. Through this method, dieters can gradually but steadily lose weight by alternating Pure Protein days and Protein + Vegetables days. The average length of this phase is based on a schedule of three days for each pound of weight lose.
The Third Phase or the Consolidation Phase is designed to prevent the rebound effect by gradually returning foods like fruit, cheese and bread.
The final stage is called Permanent Stabilization where dieters can eat whatever they want without regaining the weight. Dr. Dukan says you can do that provided that you consumer three tablespoons of oat bran everyday, you take the stair (whenever possible) and you have a pure-protein day where you only eat protein.
In addition to finding the plan online or at your local bookstore, you can follow the diet by consuming the Dr. Dukan product food line. Dieters can enjoy a delicious collection of products developed by the doctor including oat bran, chocolate muffin mix, cocoa powder, noodles, teas and natural sweeteners.
As a diet that focuses on healthy eating and lifelong weight management, I loved tasting some of the recipes and meeting with Dr. Dukan who truly loves what he does and how he has changed the lives of thousands of people (including a princess). Buy the book on Amazon here.
