Free, outdoors and wide open. What's not to love about Socrates Sculpture Park! This outdoor art space is located in Long Island City Queens--right along the East River. Socrates is the only site in the New York Metropolitan area specifically dedicated to providing artists with opportunities to create and exhibit large-scale work--and it's perfect for kids.
The open-air environment allows kids to race around and touch the art--something they can rarely do in a traditional museum. Feel free to bring a picnic and set up in the shady areas. There is always something to see--our recent visit revealed a train track sculpture, a obstacle course of sorts and a huge black building. Upcoming events include FLOAT A series of temporary, ephemeral and interactive artworks installed and performed throughout the Park. Saturday & Sunday, August 29 & 30, 2009; 12 PM - Sunset (rain or shine).
