You probably already know our First Lady, Michelle Obama, has banned highfructose corn syrup from the White House. High-fructose corn syrup is produced by a complex series of chemical reactions that includes the use of three enzymes and caustic soda. Look on the labels of popular juices, cereal, and other sweet kiddie treats and you will see this ingredient everywhere.
Some studies have tracked the rise of obesity in the United States with the invention of industrial-grade high-fructose corn syrup. Now there is another reason to say NO to HFCS. According to the Washington Post nearly "half of tested samples of commercial high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) contained mercury, which was also found in nearly a third of 55 popular brand-name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first- or second-highest labeled ingredient, according to two new U.S. studies."
Mercury is toxic. And I find this correlation horrifying. So if you needed another reason to dump the HFCS products in your fridge this is it.
