Oprah's TV Show Robs Brazilian Poor of Diet Staple'??

Did Oprah inspire you to try acai? According to Bloomberg news the US sales are way up. Acai is a purple berry from the Amazon. Oprah promoted the food on her site (read here). The trouble is, now the US consumption is depriving Brazilian natives of a protein-rich nutrient that is key to their diet.

Spending on acai-based products by Americans has doubled to $104 million pulling a valuable resource from locals. Oprah's team of experts touted the food as a "superfood" and aiding in weight loss, adding energy and slowing the aging process. We don't watch much Oprah, but we do drink acai juice. It's tangy sweet and tasty. Other foods that are on Dr. Oz's, '??anti-aging checklist" are blueberries and tomatoes.
